Not what they used to be

Overall Rating:
1 out of 5
By: Josh Roberts on Tuesday, January 15, 2008
From: Long Beach, CA (United States)
Experience: 6 Months
Pros: Cheap, supposedly.

Cons: Poor web site, not user friendly or professional-looking. Terrible customer service. Emails never answered. Long waits to talk with customer service representatives.

Summary: What a terrible experience I have had with Opex this time around.

My wife and I moved to our new place, and after a while decided that we should have a landline long distance provider for guests and for any unexpected problems with our cell phones. We chose Opex again, and have had nothing but problems ever since.

We signed up in July 2007 and it literally took me until October to get in touch with customer service. I was not even sure if my account had been activated.

I had signed up for eBilling but did not receive any kind of email informing me that my account was active and I never received notification that my bill was ready for review.

I emailed customer service three different times and received no responses at all. I phoned up customer service and every time had to wait on hold for a minimum of 5 minutes. Once, I was on hold literally for 36 minutes (I timed it), and then an operator came on and took my phone number and said they would call me back. This call back never came. I even wrote an actual letter trying to get help. Of course, I never received a response.

At one point in October 2007, I finally got through to an agent on the phone and the agent indicated that there had been a problem with activating my service but that it would be fixed within the week. But, a week later, I was unable to confirm this had happened because I could not talk to anyone again.

In November, I received a paper bill with an amount owed even though we had not made any phone calls and had signed up for eBilling back in July. Amazingly, I was able to get in touch with a customer service agent and my bill was wiped clean and I was told I should not receive any more paper bills. In December, we received another paper bill again with an amount owed. After three tries, I finally got through to an agent, and again the bill was zeroed out. Now, in January, I have finally received an eBill. This eBill shows an amount owed, thought it is only a USF fee. However, according to what I read on PhoneDog.com, there should be no USF fee if you make no calls.

Use of Opex

Overall Rating:
4.5 out of 5
By: Joanne Dearth on Friday, January 11, 2008
From: Chocowinity, NC (United States)
Experience: 2 Months
Pros: Excellent printout of phone calls, ease of bill payment by auto-debit of credit card, ability to speak with an
Opex customer service representative if one has a question.

Cons: Our son is in Spain. He has a mobile phone. One day we tried about 7 times and could not reach him which was frustrating. When I later talked to Opex, they advised me to contact them if I have trouble in the future getting through so that they can check the connection and see where the problem is.

Summary: Long distance service is much less expensive than normal phone company carriers'. Just the local monthly fee of large companies to "have access to long distance" sometimes was close to the cost of our whole OPEX bill! We were pleasantly surprised with the very low rate from the US to cell phones in Barcelona. The clarity of connection is excellent in US and abroad. We now use OPEX in NC, and we previously used it in AL for over 10 years.

opex phone service

Overall Rating:
3.8 out of 5
By: Dan Smet on Friday, January 11, 2008
From: Wausau, WI (United States)
Experience: 4 Months
Pros: rates are great, don't need to use a calling card. I will use this service as long as they are in business.

Cons: my number doesn't come up as mine when I call someone, so people with caller id, sometimes won't answer because they think it's some telemarketer.

Summary: Love the service, I hope this company lasts as I will continue to use them.

By: Carolyn Wollaeger on Wednesday, January 09, 2008
From: Henderson, NC (United States)
Experience: 3 Months
Pros: Cost, convenience

Cons: None

Summary: This is a fantastic long distance service for both inter- and intra-state calling. It works flawlessly and the very reasonable rates and lack of numerous add-on charges makes it a real winner for me. We wish we had "fired" AT&T years ago.

OPEX Beats the Competition-Hands Down!

Overall Rating:
5 out of 5
By: Allyn Collins on Wednesday, January 09, 2008
From: Silver Springs, FL (United States)
Experience: 5 Years
Pros: Low monthly fee. Lowest per minute fee.

Cons: Separate billing from local phone service.

Summary: In a world of high fees for services, why would I choose a company like that for my long distance service? OPEX Communications, Inc. is exactly what I need, charges me a very low fee, which enables me to stay within my limited budget, and still make the calls that are important to me and my family.

By: D.A. Lantz on Tuesday, October 23, 2007
From: Groton, CT (United States)

Cons: Minimum usage fee if less than $20 a month

Summary: Opex did not begin service when they said they would. Also claimed that it was customer responsibility to ensure service had started - that wasn't the case according to their original email.

Still don't know if we have service

Overall Rating:
1 out of 5
By: Theresa Olig on Tuesday, August 07, 2007
From: Portage, AK (United States)
Experience: 1 Days
Pros: This OPEX Value Plus 2.95B Plan sounded great. If it's all that it promises to be, I'll be delighted.

Cons: They seem to have customer service problems. When I called them, I was put on hold for several minutes and finally I could wait no longer. My last e-mail to them (July 21) has yet to be answered.

Summary: It has been three months since I requested this service and I have contacted them twice (plus put on lengthy hold an additional time--couldn't wait any longer) and I still don't know if I have this service. According to my last Verizon bill, my LATA carrier has been changed, but not the long distance carrier. A June 25th e-mail from OPEX stated that my order was "pending" and as I stated, I called them and was put on hold. I e-mailed them and did not receive an answer. I'm not sure what else to do.

Opex long distance

Overall Rating:
5 out of 5
By: James Spicer on Wednesday, July 04, 2007
From: Irondale, OH (United States)
Experience: 3 Months
Pros: Excellent price

Cons: None

Summary: I am on Social Security. On a fixed (low) income, I have no extra money to spend on "luxuries" which is what long distance charges have become. Opex makes it possible for me to stay in touch with family since they don't charge "luxury" prices. Thanks so much! I have been telling anyone who'll listen that they need to switch to this great service.

Lots of great stuff happening for iPhone and iPod Touch users this week. The latest from Orb is no exception.
