Long Distance

Overall Rating:
4.2 out of 5
By: Kirby Randall on Saturday, December 08, 2007
From: Zephyr Cove, NV (United States)
Experience: 6 Months
Pros: Much better price than local telco. And I cannot tell any difference in voice quality.

Cons: Separate bills for long distance and local service.

Summary: I am well pleased with Pioneer Telephone long distance and intrastate telephone service. The rates are as good as a prepaid calling card and it is easier to use.

Pioneer Telephone

Overall Rating:
2.7 out of 5
By: W.Chris Rammacher on Friday, December 07, 2007
From: Bemus Point, NY (United States)
Experience: 90 Days
Pros: -Good rates

Cons: -Hard to understand customer reps
-Online billing hard to access with Safari browser and online account difficult to access w/ created password.
-Charge 99 cents for a copy of mailed paper bill if bill is under $15.

Summary: I think the physical quality of the service is okay (voice/sound) but I think they are weak in the customer service area.

Pioneer Long Distance

Overall Rating:
3.5 out of 5
By: Dan Brown on Monday, December 03, 2007
From: Owens Cross Roads, AL (United States)
Experience: 60 Days
Pros: So far, not much to report - the advertised price per minute looks very competitive - IF there are no automatic monthly fees added.

Cons: Possibly monthly fees to be added, but will not know until a couple of statements have arrived.

Summary: I've been looking for a Long Distance carrier that had competitive rates (less than 4c per minute), yet did NOT charge an automatic monthly fee. The other plan I had before "Global Communications" started off that way, but within the past year started adding additional fees monthly ... amounting to MORE than the Long Distance bill itself. Too soon to say on Pioneer if they will do the same.

Overall Rating:
3.5 out of 5
By: Kathleen Ballard on Tuesday, November 20, 2007
From: Vadnais Heights, MN (United States)
Experience: 60 Days
Pros: cost effective and inexpensive due to very low volume of long distance calls per month

Summary: I make very few long distance calls per month (avg 1-2) so this plan is very cost effective for my needs.

Pioneer 3.3C a great deal

Overall Rating:
5 out of 5
By: Glen Martin on Tuesday, November 20, 2007
From: Coarsegold, CA (United States)
Experience: 90 Days
Pros: a great rate, great service, no problems

Cons: none

Summary: Phonedog.com was great at getting us the best priced long distance for the area we live in. We live in the country outside of a major metro area and don't have the greatest selection of LD carriers available. Our local carrier didn't provide us with as complete a listing of LD carriers as Phonedog did. Pioneer has great qualifty with no monthly fees we pay just for the minutes we use. Great job and we'll recommend Phonedog to everyone we know.

Thanks, Glen and Della

Pioneer Telephone

Overall Rating:
4.5 out of 5
By: Jim K on Friday, November 09, 2007
From: Las Vegas, NV (United States)
Experience: 3 Months
Pros: Good rate, no minimum monthly fees, no monthly fees whether you use or not.

Cons: Do not take Discover Card which was my card of choice. Do not send monthly statements (not even to E-mail), at least not yet. Need to log in to web site to check account, usage, etc.

Summary: Only switched over 2 or 3 months ago, and have not used it much, so cannot really give an extensive review. So far seems OK. They did bill my credit card $10.00 to start with, and even though I have not used $10.00 worth yet, they never give me a credit. Someday, I guess I will be up to $10.00 in usage. Reason of not much use is we usually use cell phone for LD calls. Just needed this for a LD carrier to use as needed, for sending faxes, etc. and it fits the bill very well. Have not yet tried it for international calls.

I switched

Overall Rating:
4 out of 5
By: chiara jacobsen on Thursday, November 01, 2007
From: new orleans, LA (United States)
Experience: 30 Days
Pros: relatively easy, economical, no monthly fees

Cons: Took almost two months to switch after i placed order, this was probably not Pioneer's fault, but my phone company, it took many calls to both ends and two months of very high long distance bills. As a result I switched everything to the regular phone company.

Summary: It would be very good and easy if the switch happened smoothly, in my case it did not, took a long time, and ATT charged my 30 $ to hand over my lines. Overall I would give it a very positive review, if switching was in fact easy.

Apps: OrbLive 2.0 released in App Store, enables hi-speed live TV

    Updated iPhone live TV app

Lots of great stuff happening for iPhone and iPod Touch users this week. The latest from Orb is no exception. The media-streaming company recently launched OrbLive 2.0, an iPhone app that uses Edge, Wifi and 3G networks to dish out music, videos, photos and even documents, from a Windows PC to the user's cell phone. But let's face it: The real star of the show is being able to watch live television streamed from your own computer to that...

Seriously? Riots?: NYers line up, wait, and get angry over BlackBerry Storm

    Storm Riots in NYC

What ever happened to try before you buy?  Hordes of CrackBerry addicts in New York City braved sub-freezing temperatures to line up before 6am this morning at Verizon stores in hopes of landing a BlackBerry Storm.  Lots of 'em apparently went home (or to the office) cold and angry, as VZW didn't have enough stock to meet the demand. So much for reading reviews and carefully considering new purchases in this time of economic...

Southeast Asia: is mobile web use surpassing wired access?

SE Asia: mobile vs. wired web

The Norwegian creators of the Opera browsers said today that mobile Internet use seems to be surpassing wired access in much of Southeast Asia. And that in some areas, it's the standard means of access, rather than the alternative. You can check out their monthly State of the Mobile Web report here. Storm: Verdict? Disappointing

I really, really want to like Verizon's new BlackBerry Storm.  I want to love it.  Why?  Well, competition is good, and in the year and a half since the original iPhone launched, no other phone has been able to match the performance of its touchscreen or Web browser.  HTC's Touch Pro and G1, and Samsung's Epix and Eternity have impressed me as of late, but none of these devices offers the fingers-on touchscreen experience of...
