"The best software at the expense of hardware (vs competing 2013 devices)"

The Google (LG) Nexus 4 is an amazing phone that offers the absolute best software Google has to offer, and that is saying a lot, given the software giant's history. For the purposes of this review, I shall do all my ratings in comparison to the current Android King, the HTC One.

Its display is absolutely top notch It is bright, easily readable even in direct sunlight, and looks very crisp. With a custom kernel, you can even make the colours, which were its only down side, pop right at you. However, vs competing 2013 smartphones, the lack of full 1080p may be somewhat noticeable. That and the fact that a custom kernel is in fact needed to fix the washed out stock colours forces me to deduct a point from an otherwise perfect display.

Reception and call quality is great, as you'd expect from any smartphone in this day and age. In reality, the quality of the service you get is very dependent on your Network provider. The lack of (official) LTE is a down side however, and costs the device a point. On a network like Wind Mobile (Canada) where LTE isn't available anyway, this can be ignored.

Battery life is disappointing. On stock, I was unable to make it past a full day, albeit this is also partially due to me spending a vast amount of time in an area were my reception is cut off, forcing the phone to always be searching for a signal (to clarify, this is the WIND networks fault, not the phones) If you are willing to root and install a custom rom/kernel however (this is a nexus device, be adventurous), the issue is mostly alleviated. On stock, it is not what you'd expect from a high end phone.

Design is a double edged sword. While the device is absolutely gorgeous and feels premium in the hand, the glass back will also have you living in a state of constant fear, where you will be praying to whatever gods you believe in from the most pathetic of drops. Get a case and the problem is gone (but so is the premium feel... sad times)

The real key aspect of the device comes with its status as a nexus device. This phone will age slower than any other phone that will come out this year (short of the Nexus 5). You are guaranteed a phone that will stay fresh and current through its entire life time, and to top it off all of that for a ridiculously low price. When compared to other devices in its price range, the Nexus 4 absolutely decimates them. And thanks to Google being in control, chances are that 3 years down the road, the device will feel a better purchase then even the hardware-superior HTC One. Hence why I believe this device to be the best android device currently available for the money.
