Aaron's Palm Pre review
Overview Pros: Fantastic operating system, multitasking capabilities, easy to use Cons: Battery life, lack of a progress bar in music player Introduction To put it as simply as I can, Palm is back in the game. The Palm Pre is a revolutionary device that marks a radical shift for the company, and provides a much-needed exclusive device for Sprint. The good: Cool looking. Nice interfaces. Beautiful screen. Compact design. Multiple screens can be open at once. Good phone reception (as compared to Blackberry). The bad: Battery drains in 3-4 hours of regular use. Email interface is S-L-O-W. Weird things go wrong intermittently, with no rhyme or reason: For example the keypad works in my voicemail program sometimes, and sometimes it doesn't. Not enough apps yet--Facebook, eBay, games etc, but hopefully that will come soon. Speed dial requires pull down keypad--hard when in a hurry, which is, after all, the point of SPEED dial. Setting up email was an 11-hour nightmare for me. So was transferring my contacts.Summary: This phone is definitely a mixed bag. It is cool, no doubt, but it is temperamental, slow, and idiosyncratic, and I think over time it may drive me nuts for daily use. Here are some strange things: Email must be web-based, because when you click to open an email, it takes about 10 seconds for you to be able to access the text of the email. Irritating.
The contact list is similarly slow. It does not just pop up.
For someone used to the speed of Blackberry for contacts and emails, this is irritating.
The battery is definitely an issue. People work 8-10 hour days, not 3-4 hour days. This morning, my battery was drained before noon. This will not be good.
That said, I intend to give this a real try for my 30-day trial period, and we'll see.
I have an iTouch, and so I know what that is all about. This is not an "iPhone killer", and I'm not sure it will "save Palm."
