1. Apple iPhone (AT&T)

Problems abound with the new iPhone 3G, from lag during text entry to horrific voice and data service on AT&T in major metropolitan areas. But iPhone is still the best all-around handset in the game, which means it's still the phone I carry every day and still rests atop my Top 5. The closely monitored App Store extends iPhone's functionality into smartphone-meets-mini computer land, and the best-in-class touchscreen, Web browser, photo viewer, and media player make iPhone the easiest and most fun to use multimedia-rich feature phone out there. Beware, though, Apple: the competition is creeping closer and I personally am jonesing for a QWERTY board on my phone. Lucky for you T-Mobile and Google botched what should have been a home run in the G1 (see my Top 5 I Haven't Yet Used list).

2. BlackBerry Bold 9000 (Rogers - Canada; Coming Soon to AT&T)

I never thought I'd actually lust after a BlackBerry but the Bold changed all of that when I tried it out at CTIA a few weeks ago. It's everything a business phone should be with a healthy dash of style to boot. Slim, powerful, and multimedia-rich thanks to a gorgeous new display, gussied up media player and Web browser, and integrated 3.5mm headphone jack and camera w/flash. Could I actually leave my multitouch iPhone experience for the trackball and QWERTY board of Bold? Ask me after it launches in the US; the answer might just be Yes.

3. HTC Touch Pro (Unlocked GSM; Coming Soon to Sprint)
If the Touch Pro had an integrated headphone jack it just might be my #1 right now (what can I say, I listen to music on my phone daily and hate Stereo Bluetooth (recharging + inferior sound quality = I'll stick with wires, thanks)). Thanks to a potent combination of the gorgeous TouchFLO 3D interface and a slide-out QWERTY keypad, the Touch Pro serves up the best Windows Mobile experience I've seen to date. The VGA touchscreen is small but super high-res, which caused me some data entry issues on Pro's kid brother, the Touch Diamond. Not so here, thanks to that QWERTY board. Pro also adds a flash to the 3.2 MP camera, which is a nice touch. Look for Touch Pro to rule the WinMo roost on Sprint, VZW, and AT&T here in the States ... at least until Sony Ericsson finally launches the Xperia X1 (another device HTC had a part in creating).

4. Nokia E71 (Unlocked GSM)

Sexiest Nokia ever. I know the hardcore phone phans will cry foul on this one, claiming that the N96, N95, and/or N85 should all be ranked higher than the E71. But for me the E71 gets the nod for three reasons: Style, All-Around Functionality, and Mass Appeal. The E71's metal body is shiny and sleek, the QWERTY board is entirely usable, and the phone packs a ton of connectivity and functionality. While the other Nokias I mentioned may have higher-res cameras or larger displays, the E71 brings plenty to the table and provides a legitimate BlackBerry/iPhone alternative for the power user and more style and pocketability than the oversized N95/96. If only Americans could learn to embrace Symbian ...

5. LG Lotus (Coming Soon to Sprint)

This is my wildcard and it could come back to haunt me :-) I was really impressed with Lotus when I tried it out at CTIA. Why? LG and Sprint packed a ton of functionality into a relatively small, easy to use phone. QWERTY? Check. HTML Browser? Check. High-speed data? Check. Sprint Music and TV? Check. Camera? Check. Dual-displays? Check. The big questions here are, 1) How will it perform under daily usage in the real world, and; 2) Will people take to the somewhat strange square shape of the thing?

Honorable Mention: LG Dare (VZW), LG Voyager (VZW), BlackBerry Curve (Multiple Carriers), Nokia N96 (Unlocked GSM), HTC Touch Diamond (Sprint), Samsung Instinct (Sprint), Nokia XpressMusic 5310 (T-Mobile)

VIDEO: Mailbag & Top 5 Phones - Sep 19: iPhone, Bold, Touch Pro ...

It's mailbag time!
Yesterday at this time I also didn't feel good. That was because I partied too much the night before. Happy hour with a few industry friends, then a press party, Nokia party, Verizon party ... these things add up. Today I don't feel good because I actually worked the show yesterday. And while I kept the partying to a healthy minimum last night and got home reasonably early, when I closed my eyes to go to sleep I couldn't turn my brain off ... Which phone was my favorite? Which phone did I want to get some more time with today? Which phone that hasn't been shown yet am I most excitedly waiting for?

Trade shows are nothing if not overstimulating, and this year's Fall CTIA has definitely been a bit more newsworthy than last year's show. So there was plenty to keep me from settling down and drifting off last night, even though I'd avoided the party scene. Ah, well, occupational hazard.

So what'd I see yesterday and what'd I think? Let's start with HTC:

HTC

First off, thanks Eric for getting us out of the convention center and to a bright, airy space with good coffee for our meeting. Always nice to do these things with a bit of style and some clean air and natural light ;-)

Touch Diamond: I've got a Sprint-branded review unit to unbox and review, and I'm looking forward to it. I like what HTC and Sprint did with the back panel of the phone, and the minor "Sprintifications" to TouchFlo 3D look good. Sprint Music Store and Sprint TV seem to work well, too. Look for a full video or two soon.

Touch Pro: On the one hand I'm really excited for Touch Diamond + QWERTY. On the other hand, this sucker is thick. On the third hand (?), the Sprint-branded version has a nice silver/grey color scheme and rounded edges that give the device a sleek look that almost helps you forget how thick it is. Touch Pro will launch at a relatively small $50 premium over Diamond, so I'm very curious to see how it fares in the marketplace. Bulk aside, it looks to be a pretty sweet Windows Mobile solution.

S740: I was surprised by how much I dug this phone person. It's long, skinny, and not paritcularly thin, and there's no touchscreen, but somehow it really worked for me. I think I liked how roomy the QWERTY pad was and how it felt like a phone when I held it to my ear - the long, narrow body put the microphone closer to my mouth than most current cell phones do. Also, the S740's unique shape made it feel like an artifiact from the future. Too bad for us it'll only be available in Europe; an unlocked GSM version will work in the U.S. but won't offer compatible 3G bands.

Touch HD: Didn't see this one, didn't get any word on it, but I'm guessing we should keep our eyes open for more on this forthcoming all-touch, WVGA badboy.

My big complaint about Diamond is that the screen is too small for me to comfortably use it with my fingertips. And I'm just not a stylus kind of guy. Pro's slide-out QWERTY board means I can type on buttons and use the touchscreen "only" for pressing buttons and gesturing my way through the UI - instead of trying to write messages and enter URLs via onscreen keypads. Much, much nicer if you ask me.

Like I said, we'll be back soon with more on this one, but HTC may just have the Windows Mobile device of the season on their hands. Look for it in the coming months on Sprint and AT&T (as the Fuze), at the very lest.

ARTICLE: HTC on Sprint: Touch Diamond for Sprint mid-Sept, Touch Pro on 10/19

A thread on Sprint Users "confirms" release and pricing info for HTC's Touch Diamond and Touch Pro smartphones on Sprint. To be fair, the thread has images of device hotsheets, so this looks pretty legit. I just like putting words like "confirms" in quotes whenever I can.

Looks like we'll see the Touch Diamond by the middle of this month (that'd be September) at an on-contract/after rebate price of $249.99. Rumors are pointing to Sunday the 14th as the exact date, as Sprint seems to have a thing for releasing new phones on Sundays. Touch Pro (basically Touch Diamond with a slide-out QWERTY board) will supposedly drop on October 19 at a cost of $329.99 after rebate when you sign on for two years of service.

I'm fully expecting to get my mitts on one, if not both, of these badboys next week at CTIA. Stay tuned for more ...

ARTICLE: Rumors: HTC Touch Pro and SE w760a coming to AT&T?

Hey AT&T fans, I've got a couple of juicy tidbits to liven up your Monday morning. Grab a fresh cuppa Joe and get your reading glasses on ...

First up, WMpoweruser lifted some pics from an XDA-developers forum post of looks to be a US-ready HTC Touch Pro complete with AT&T-compatible 3G frequencies. The user who posted the pics claims to have picked it up for a cool $900 though another post in the thread speculates that the device is really just a pre-release HTC Pro sample flashed with a leaked AT&T ROM. There's also a good deal of concern over a difference between the keyboards on this model and those in HTC's press photos - looks like the numeric keys have been moved from the top row into a dialing configuration in the middle left of the thumbboard. Jeesh, remember when we all just had $19 push-button phones wall-mounted in our kitchens?
Anyway, whether this particular person's claims are legit or not, we should be seeing some GSM Touch Pros before too long. I'll wager we'll first see a CDMA Touch Pro on Sprint and then maybe some unlocked GSM versions floating around (though perhaps with European 3G only), and then an AT&T-branded model.

Meantime, CellPhone Signal has "confirmed" the upcoming debut of Sony Ericsson's W760a 3G Walkman phone on AT&T. While the phone sounds good, what with its 3.2MP camera, integrated GPS, motion sensor and dual WCDMA American bands, I can't help but be a little disappointed that seven full months have gone by since I first tried this one out at CES and it's still not available stateside. Maybe it was initially planned as a T-Mobile exclusive to coincide with their 3G rollout but got pushed back since said rollout hasn't yet happened? Who knows, but CPS says to keep an eye out for an AT&T-branded W760a in the coming few weeks.

A EV-DO data, and an alumnium body. Word is that Sprint will launch the Victor as soon as September 2nd of this year.

We also should be seeing CDMA versions of the Touch Pro coming to both Sprint and VZW, with Sprint's "HTC Herman" (really?) coming about a month after Victor. More details on these QWERTY-ful beauties are available over on PhoneArena.

ARTICLE: Sprint Roadmap: HTC, BlackBerry, LG, Palm, Sanyo on Tap for Summer

A purported "internal Sprint document" is floating around the InterWeb, apparently originating from HowardForums. The image shows Sprint's supposed Q3 '08 New Product roadmap, and is highlighted by the mysterious "MP6950" by HTC, which could be a Touch Dual, Touch Diamond, or even a Touch Pro. The current HTC Touch for Sprint carries the MP6900 model number, so logic would dictate that the 6950 is some sort of successor - I'm guessing Diamond but hoping for Pro. A launch date of September 2 is listed for this one.
