LG enV Touch - Verizon

The successor to the popular LG Voyager has so much going for it, it really blurs the line between "feature phone" and "smartphone." Featuring a 3.5mm headphone jack, a more responsive touchscreen and nicer UI than Voyager, and Web browser that's arguably better than the ones found on many smartphones, enV Touch just about does it all. If you can live without WiFi and smartphone-style PC syncing, enV Touch brings solid messaging, Web, and multimedia experiences to a relatively thin form factor featuring a top-notch QWERTY board. Just keep an eye on that battery life if you're tweeting and listening to music all day long on your enV Touch.

1a. LG enV3 - Verizon
Imagine enV Touch minus the touchscreen, with a somewhat lower-res display and less tricked out Web browser. Now imagine that with better battery life. Boom!: enV3.

2. Samsung Memoir (T-Mobile)

Memoir stands perched at the top of the cameraphone mountain right now, thanks to its combination of quality optics (for a phone) and a full feature set. While AT&T's new SE c905a matches Memoir in pixel count, Memoir's full touch interface, large display, and thinner, more pocketable form factor give it the edge. I wish phone companies would stop with the megapixel race already, as most cameraphone photos wind up being shared online, where 2 or 3 MPs more than suffice. But if you actually plan to print some of your photos and can't be bothered with carrying a separate camera, Memoir is well worth a look.

3. LG Lotus - Sprint

Lotus may or may not be a "girl's phone," but it doesn't matter - LG packed a ton of features and a very useable QWERTY board into the compact, somewhat oddly shaped Lotus, and it's a winner. With a full HTML browser, a bunch of messaging, media, and social networking features, and an external display with media controls. Lotus does just about everything a feature phone should. And that odd square shape provides ample room for a very comfy QWERTY thumbboard.

4. Samsung Impression - AT&T

While Impression's AT&T stablemate, the LG Xenon, may be a slightly better value, it's hard to argue with Impression's huge, glorious AMOLED display and roomy QWERTY thumbboard. While the display suffers in bright outdoor light, once you take it out of the sun it's spectacular. Samsung's featurephone Web browsers provide a full HTML experience, and that QWERTY is seriously roomy. If only Sammy would ditch the proprietary connectors in favor of USB and 3.5mm audio, already.

5. Nokia 5310 XpressMusic - T-Mobile

Lucky me, I got an up-close look at the designer's latest on the runway last night — and I have to say, I'm impressed.

Last fall, Siriano — erstwhile contestant and last year's winner of Project Runway — created a scarf with a designated pocket specifically tailored to fit the LG Lotus (which is, by the way, possibly my favorite non-smartphone).

I'll say this: The scarf was definitely pretty, with a somewhat billowy and ethereal sensibility. In fact, it was a strong piece on its own. The phone, which was supposed to be featured there, seemed like an afterthought to the garment and actually looked like a square black inkspot that was out of place against the subdued aesthetic.

This time around, however, Siriano got the balance right. The satiny, chocolate-colored vest really spotlighted the phone, which was integrated brilliantly. He featured the Lotus' small form factor by likening it to a pocket watch, with fob and all. That was genius; it added the touch of hardware that was needed to bridge old and new, classic fashion and technology. The shiny glimmer of the fabric also worked — without it, the vest might've seemed too stodgy. (Plus the tomboy in me just loves it when guys' stuff get integrated into womenswear.)

As part of the LG-Siriano partnership, the company has also launched a new contest for budding designers and stylists. Siriano, looking for inspiration in the design of a new LG Lotus accessory, is asking people to submit "mood boards" online. (These are boards with pinned or tacked up fabric samples, images, textures and anything else that can inspire creative design.) The winner will get an all-expenses-paid trip to New York City and an opportunity to work with the designer on co-creating the accessory.

Siriano certainly seems obsessed with the Lotus. This will be his third venture with this specific cell phone model. "Divas and designers want fashionable phones worthy of their creativity," he says. "Mobile phones are fashion accessories, and the LG Lotus is sleek, chic, and fabulous!"

Boy, he said that right. The number of cell phones buzzing off in the tents was crazy. Some even had theirs on during the show, like one little B-list celeb I managed to snap across the aisle from me. (See below.)

In light of last night's event (and others), I've got to say that I'm having a pretty interesting run at PhoneDog. Thanks to Noah and the crew, I've come face to face with Jason Biggs, Erika Christensen and — Tori Spelling??

The former 90210 chick was there to support Siriano (as well as her own bottom line, since the designer used her line of jewelry to accessorize the show). I couldn't tell what she was holding, but I could make out that the gadget didn't go with her dress — which is a big no-no at Fashion Week.

USER COMMENT: Re: LG Lotus LX600-Black

can some one send just the phone to 72204 little arkansas i really want it please

ARTICLE: Letters to Cleo: VZW Samsung Strut looks familiar in a full QWERTY flip sort of way

Sprint's LG Lotus is one of my - and Adriana's - favorite phones of the
year. While the square, makeup-compact-lookalike shape may strike some
as odd, it allows for a nice, big display and full QWERTY board in a
compact form factor. And it's a flip, which some people just can't
live without (ahem, RA, ahem).

Well, if you're on Verizon and you've been jealous of your
neighbor's Lotus for the past few months, you're time is almost nigh.
No, there's not a VZW-branded Lotus on the horizon, but there is a
similarly flippable QWERTY phone on deck for you, Big Red customer: The
Samsung Strut.

I've been hearing about this device for awhile now - both in under its Canadian moniker, "Cleo,"
and the much less fun "U440" designation - but today's the first time I
heard the words "Samsung," "Strut," and "Verizon" all together in the
same sentence. While I haven't yet seen a Verizon logo on the device, Engadget Mobile sounds pretty certain that Cleo+VZW=Strut, so let's take their word for it, shall we? The
FCC outed the U440 last month, and based on their filings it looks like
we'll see some pretty basic specs, uh, Strut-ting around VZW's lineup
pretty soon: 1.3 MP camera, expandable storage up to 8GB, and
messaging-focused features.

Personally, I'm kind of liking Lotus's square angles a bit more
that Strut's curved lines, but I'll have to get this thing in hand
before I can say for sure. No word yet on release date and/or pricing,
though I hear VZW is pondering dropping a few new handsets on us during
the first or second week of January.

ARTICLE: Mini-Review: LG Lotus - Sprint

Pros: Stylish design, tactile QWERTY board, generous widescreen, decent camera, exceptional ease-of-use, CDMA, 3G, EV-DO, GPS, Bluetooth

Cons: Occasionally slow switching between apps/inputting data, no 3.5 mm headset jack, expensive

Ladies with an attitude, fellas that are in the mood... Let's get to it.

The Lotus, a morsel of deliciousness courtesy of LG, is -- in a word -- sublime. Why, you ask? Because it's easy to use, it works well and it looks good. (Such a simple formula, yet so elusive, especially in the mobile phone industry.)

The first thing you notice about this stylish little gizmo is its unique design. It's about the size of a makeup compact and roughly the same square-ish shape, at 3.3 inches tall by 2.4 inches wide, and 0.7 inch thick. Being purple and vaguely reminiscent of a cosmetic, this cell might keep some guys away, so if you're one of them, check out the matte black version instead. Consider this too: The Lotus feels better inside a jeans pocket than the slimmest of wallets, is light enough to carry anywhere (yet doesn't feel like a toy) and offers an awesome, unencumbered texting experience.

And did I mention that it looks good? (Yes, I know I did, but it allows me to bring up that it won a Red Dot Design Award.)

The form factor has everything to do with what's inside. Not only does the dedicated QWERTY keyboard feel great to the touch, thanks to the raised little domes on each key, but the handset's width (which is bigger than today's typical flippies) offers enough physical phone to hold with both hands and type comfortably. It also enables miniature widescreen action, which helps when using the Web or Sprint TV (though I'm not a fan of the carrier's TV service on any of its phones).

What I like is that it doesn't try to be all things to all people. It's not a shrunken laptop or wannabe multimedia hub, which is fortunate since it has no Wifi or video player. But it does offer all the standard features average cell phone users expect these days, plus a few extras.

You can personalize the One-Click interface so the homescreen displays weather, news, sports, finance and horoscope info. Accessing the 2.0 MP camera is easy too, though it would be better if it were one of the custom carousel options. And the pictures are good, which didn't surprise me, given the good execution of the phone's other features. What I didn't expect was a respectable camcorder. I wouldn't record my wedding on it, but it's more than fine for YouTube uploads. The music player works great and can even go to the background while you do other stuff. Call quality is also clear, both on my end and on the other end (so I'm told). The handset has 80MB of built-in memory, which is adequate, but also offers a microSD-card slot, in addition to email, web, GPS, and Bluetooth, which paired with my Mac seamlessly. This makes sending files to my computer not only straightforward, but fun! I keep fishing around for more pics and other stuff to transmit.

And best of all, I rarely need to consult the manual, which means that the layout and UI are very clear and logical. This superb ease-of-use blows my stylish, yet affordable boots right off.

I'm hard pressed to come up with any downsides, except for some lagginess, lack of a 3.5 mm headphone jack (it has a 2.5 mm) and $150 price tag (with 2-year agreement). But beauty is rarely cheap, and in this case, it's not just skin deep.

Verdict: Thumbs WAY up

VIDEO: LG Lotus (Sprint) - Review Pt 2

Part 2 of Noah's full review of the QWERTY-rific LG Lotus clamshell phone for Sprint.

VIDEO: LG Lotus (Sprint) - Review Pt 1

Part 1 of Noah's full review of the LG Lotus QWERTY clamshell for Sprint.

USER REVIEW: Fantastic phone!!!

PROS</b
-One Click is very easy to use and very helpful ( I personally like having weather and horoscope bubbles from my home icon)
-Great camera quality
-Style/design is new and refreshing which is great for sprint customers whose main choices were standard flip phones and smartphones.
-Tv/radio applications run well (as well as a phone should anyway)
-youtube application is also a nice feature
CONS
-It might just be because since I got it (10/26) I've been barely able to put it down, but the battery is a little lacking. Happy Monday, and a quick hello to you.

First off, congrats to the Tampa Bay Rays! No, I'm not a Rays fan - I'm not much on baseball in general, actually. Having lived in New York for nine years, I just like to see Boston sports teams lose. So big ups to Joe Maddon and the gang!

Several people have asked when the full review of the LG Lotus is coming. It'll be here very soon! It turns out I got my Lotus before all of Lotus' services were operational on Sprint's network, so I had to wait a few days before I could check out things like YouTube functionality on the device. Everything's up and running now, though, so the full review will be coming shortly.

It's also been, um, just a little bit busy around here - so there's plenty to tide you over if you're waiting on that Lotus review! Obviously we did a lot of T-Mobile G1 coverage last week. We'll have a little more for you this week, and I've been getting some interesting requests for comparison videos and coverage of specific features. "How can I track the destruction of my stock portfolio on the G1?" seems to be a common question, if a macabre one. So stay tuned for more G1 stuff, most likely including a Dogfight of some sort ...

Beyond that, we've got A TON of new releases to cover for you. Here's a quick glance at what came into the PhoneDog West offices last week:

Pantech Matrix (AT&T)

Sony Ericsson w760 (AT&T)

Sony Ericsson c902 (Unlocked)

Motorola Krave ZN4 (VZW)

Motorola Rapture (VZW)

Samsung Rant (Sprint)

Samsung High Note (Sprint)

Beyond that, I'm still working with the LG Lotus (Sprint) and, of course, the G1. And we're expecting more devices in the coming weeks: The holiday shopping season is just ramping up, so we should see a bunch of new phones being released in the next month or two - high profile devices like the HTC Touch Pro for Sprint and AT&T, BlackBerry Storm for Verizon (and maybe even the Bold on AT&T) and Sony Ericsson Xperia X1, and plenty of "lower end" phones that will pack a ton of functionailty at very low prices. AT&T's already announced three more QWERTY phones to go with Matrix, LG's working on some more stuff for the holidays, and you can be sure that the other phone companies also have a few tricks up their sleeves for the rest of 2008.

1. Apple iPhone (AT&T)

Problems abound with the new iPhone 3G, from lag during text entry to horrific voice and data service on AT&T in major metropolitan areas. But iPhone is still the best all-around handset in the game, which means it's still the phone I carry every day and still rests atop my Top 5. The closely monitored App Store extends iPhone's functionality into smartphone-meets-mini computer land, and the best-in-class touchscreen, Web browser, photo viewer, and media player make iPhone the easiest and most fun to use multimedia-rich feature phone out there. Beware, though, Apple: the competition is creeping closer and I personally am jonesing for a QWERTY board on my phone. Lucky for you T-Mobile and Google botched what should have been a home run in the G1 (see my Top 5 I Haven't Yet Used list).

2. BlackBerry Bold 9000 (Rogers - Canada; Coming Soon to AT&T)

I never thought I'd actually lust after a BlackBerry but the Bold changed all of that when I tried it out at CTIA a few weeks ago. It's everything a business phone should be with a healthy dash of style to boot. Slim, powerful, and multimedia-rich thanks to a gorgeous new display, gussied up media player and Web browser, and integrated 3.5mm headphone jack and camera w/flash. Could I actually leave my multitouch iPhone experience for the trackball and QWERTY board of Bold? Ask me after it launches in the US; the answer might just be Yes.

3. HTC Touch Pro (Unlocked GSM; Coming Soon to Sprint)
If the Touch Pro had an integrated headphone jack it just might be my #1 right now (what can I say, I listen to music on my phone daily and hate Stereo Bluetooth (recharging + inferior sound quality = I'll stick with wires, thanks)). Thanks to a potent combination of the gorgeous TouchFLO 3D interface and a slide-out QWERTY keypad, the Touch Pro serves up the best Windows Mobile experience I've seen to date. The VGA touchscreen is small but super high-res, which caused me some data entry issues on Pro's kid brother, the Touch Diamond. Not so here, thanks to that QWERTY board. Pro also adds a flash to the 3.2 MP camera, which is a nice touch. Look for Touch Pro to rule the WinMo roost on Sprint, VZW, and AT&T here in the States ... at least until Sony Ericsson finally launches the Xperia X1 (another device HTC had a part in creating).

4. Nokia E71 (Unlocked GSM)

Sexiest Nokia ever. I know the hardcore phone phans will cry foul on this one, claiming that the N96, N95, and/or N85 should all be ranked higher than the E71. But for me the E71 gets the nod for three reasons: Style, All-Around Functionality, and Mass Appeal. The E71's metal body is shiny and sleek, the QWERTY board is entirely usable, and the phone packs a ton of connectivity and functionality. While the other Nokias I mentioned may have higher-res cameras or larger displays, the E71 brings plenty to the table and provides a legitimate BlackBerry/iPhone alternative for the power user and more style and pocketability than the oversized N95/96. If only Americans could learn to embrace Symbian ...

5. LG Lotus (Coming Soon to Sprint)

This is my wildcard and it could come back to haunt me :-) I was really impressed with Lotus when I tried it out at CTIA. Why? LG and Sprint packed a ton of functionality into a relatively small, easy to use phone. QWERTY? Check. HTML Browser? Check. High-speed data? Check. Sprint Music and TV? Check. Camera? Check. Dual-displays? Check. The big questions here are, 1) How will it perform under daily usage in the real world, and; 2) Will people take to the somewhat strange square shape of the thing?

Honorable Mention: LG Dare (VZW), LG Voyager (VZW), BlackBerry Curve (Multiple Carriers), Nokia N96 (Unlocked GSM), HTC Touch Diamond (Sprint), Samsung Instinct (Sprint), Nokia XpressMusic 5310 (T-Mobile)

VIDEO: LG Lotus (Sprint) - Hands-on @ CTIA Fall '08

Noah gets Fierce! with the new LG Lotus for Sprint and a one-of-a-kind accessory designed by Christian from Project Runway.
LG Lotus: This is the most interesting device of the lot for me. And not just because I got to wear the custom scarf designed by Project Runway winner Christian Siriano (seriously - you can see me looking foolish in it in the video). Lotus is a square-shaped clamshell phone that looks a lot like a makeup compact and will come in all black and black with a purple front faceplate featuring a flower motif. The device has a big, 2.1" external screen and an even bigger 2.4" internal display, and also features a full QWERTY thumbboard on the inside. Lotus will support just about all of Sprint's multimedia offerings, including Sprint TV, and packs a 2MP camera with video capture mode. The phone also sports Sprint's new One Click UI, which is designed to promote ease-of-use via customizable home screen "tiles" and shortcut menus.

Lotus is chock full of features, and the unique square clamshell design provides ample room for a comfy QWERTY board and big internal display. My question is whether or not consumers will adopt the strange shape of the phone. I actually think the square design has a lot going for it in terms of practicality, and it certainly offers a unique alternative to the standard rectangular look of most cell phones. But people fear change a lot of the time, and I really am curious to see if Lotus can make it hip to be square this Fall.

ARTICLE: Fierce fashion: Christian Siriano designs scarf to hold the LG Lotus

NEW YORK LG Electronics MobileComm U.S.A, Inc.
