ARTICLE: T-Mobile News: Nokia 5610 on Aug 11 and 3G rollout October 1st

Quick update for all you T-Mobile fans out there:

Cell Phone Signal is reporting that T-Mobile will finally launch the Nokia XpressMusic 5610 on August 11, which is a week from Monday (aka a week after my birthday). The sliderphone big brother to the recently debuted 5310 will purportedly cost $100 on contract after a $50 mail-in rebate. As I wrote back in April:

The 5610 offers a 3.2 MP camera with 30fps video recording, music player with external controls and stereo Bluetooth, myFaves support, and an Email client in a slider phone body. I really dug this one when I checked it out back at CES (see photos here).

CPS is also targeting 8/11 as the launch day for the 5310 in a new color scheme - Silver. I'm likin' the looks of this one, and have to say once again that the 5310 is a great low-end musicphone. Personally I'd take this one over the MOTO ROKR E8 as it's far smaller/thinner but still features a solid music player with standard 3.5mm headphone jack.

TmoNews is confirming a story I wrote about a few weeks back: T-Mobile will officially launch their nationwide 3G network on October 1st of this year. The rollout will begin with 27 markets across the land, and while no details have been given you've gotta assume the campaign will feature a least a few exciting new 3G handsets. I know, I know, "exciting" + "handsets" hasn't = "T-Mobile" for awhile now ...

The 5300 was a neat little music phone, but chunky. The new 5310 is sleeker, slimmer, and sexier than the original. 2MP Camera, 3.5mm headphone jack, Stereo Bluetooth, myFaves, and a 1GB microSD card. And it's cheap, too!

Poor MegaDoug was all set to hit up the big T-Mobile/Nokia launch party in NYC last night but he got ravaged by a nasty bug of some sort and was stuck at home sipping ginger ale and hoping to get some sleep at long last. Feel better, Doug. Me, I'm back home in California and so couldn't make it to the shindig. No matter, though, it's the phone you're interested in, not the party.

T-Mobile's going to release the Nokia 5310 on May 28th, for the low low price of $49.99 after contract and rebate. This is the first of two XpressMusic handsets set to drop on TMo this Spring (a higher-end slider, the 5610, should be out by late June), and the first T-Mobile device I can think of to feature a 3.5mm headphone jack (hurrah!). Nokia music phones tend to offer solid sound and ease-of-use at the slight expense of style, but this one looks pretty good : 0.39 inches thick, weighs only 3 ounces, comes in three color combinations, 1GB microSD card included, and features external music player controls, that standard headphone jack along with stereo Bluetooth, FM radio, and a 2" QVGA display.

The only real negative here is that the 5310 is relegated to EDGE and not T-Mo's new 3G data network. But, hey, it's a cheapy music phone, and how many of those actually have 3.5mm headphone jacks? It sounds silly, but when it comes to replacing your iPod with your cell phone, the point is to carry as little junk as possible. No 3.5mm jack means carrying an adapter, which defeats the whole purpose if you ask me.

Nokia introduced two new Xpress Music devices last Fall, and it looks like T-Mobile may be bringing them to the U.S. in just a few more weeks. According to TmoNews, the Xpress Music 5310 and 5610 will be ready for sale through T-Mobile USA starting May 10 (which is a Saturday).

Meanwhile, the 5310 brings similar black and red styling to a candybar phone featuring a 3.5mm AV jack and 2MP camera along with side-panel dedicated music keys. Both look way sexier than the functional but chunky XpressMusic 5300 I reviewed just over a year ago. Can't wait for these to drop, especially if the 5610 brings some auto focus and flash action to its camera.

TmoNews actually goes on to suggest that Nokia may be T-Mob's new Samsung, saying that the carrier has been pushing Sammy phones hard for awhile now and is set to shift their focus to selling Nokia handsets instead. There may even be a few N-Series devices in your future if you're a T-Mob subscriber. Now wouldn't that be somethin'?
