the phone itself is pretty good for me,but for others there may be better. I can honestly say that if i compared it to the LG xenon,a phone i also like a lot,the matrix would win.

I MUST KNOW THE ANSWER!!!! Does anybody know if the ringer id for the pantech matrix also applies to the sound it makes when certain contacts TEXT you??? I need to know before i do something stupid!!! I've been trying to find this answer for... A WEEK AND A HALF... stores... sites... forums... referrals to guides... SOMEBODY WITH A MATRIX PLZ ANSR MEEEEEE!!!!

hey, im a teen and ya know, (love to text). this phone has won me over IF it has one trait. DURABILITY. ive heard its not the MOST durable phone, and its really an easy phone to break. drop it once and it falls apart/starts to restart at random times.. well, idc so much about the restarting but can you or someone make a durability video. in the video you'd maybe drop it a few times. see how it deals with being dropped. if it can survive like a few drops to concrete, then im set and this will be my new phone!

I really love this phone! It looks very nice, and the keypads feel nice, although it would be nice if it was a smartphone, but I realize it is a messaging phone, so it is nice for what you pay for. I personally would give it a 4.5 out of 5. Thanks Noah, the unboxing was great, and gave me a clue for what to look for when or if I get it. I can't wait to get it, and Phone Dog has been a lot of help.

Pros: 3G, full QWERTY, total messaging package, good value, feels tough.

Cons: GPS isn't free, it's pretty thick.

I'm loving the selection of messaging devices this season: Propel, Gravity, Slate, Quickfire, Rant, and Matrix are a few off the top of my head, but I know there are more out there. If you're heavy on text and into the novelty of experimental form factors, the Matrix should be at the top of your list.
The C740 is an updated 'dumbphone' version of Pantech's Duo model from last year. This one does have a sharper look, and it's pretty slick considering how chunky it is. The operating system is much more appropriate for this type of device than WinMo was for the Duo.

The software works well, and offers a no-frills interface for getting things done quickly and simply. I see an odd 3D effect when I have the screen in landscape mode, but it's possible that I just need new glasses. I've been using this prescription for at least four years. The colors are bright, and the display is fine for a phone at this price.

For those who haven't seen the Matrix or Duo, this one is a dual-slider. Push the face up, and you get a standard, but very cool, telephone dialing pad. Close it and push the face to the right, and you're presented with a full, slightly-angled-grid-style QWERTY. The display goes into landscape mode when the keyboard is out, and there are two keys at the upper corners for contextual menus. Take a look at Noah's video for some beefy tunes and a better idea of how the Matrix is laid out.

I personally prefer phone keyboards with a staggered pattern, like those seen on most desktop and laptop computers. But this one feels nice. It's a tactile surface, and I was touch typing by the end of the first day. I like the materials Pantech used for the keyboard. The keys feel great, and the design of the body makes it really easy to access the QWERTY. It's very comfortable for typing long messages at high speeds. There's nothing in the way, and the compact keyboard doesn't give me cramps.

As for the cam, it's good for quick, on-the-go snaps you want to send off to another phone. I'm not a big fan of the Matrix as a music player, but it works. It is a messaging device, and the price is right. It's just the kind of phone I'd get as a gift for my wife to make texting easier on her. It's great for IM, email, and MMS as well, so it really is a complete messaging package. I wouldn't pay for the GPS, though.

The Matrix is a hefty .83" thick, but if you wear loose pants or carry your phone in a purse, it probably won't be an issue. It didn't bother me in my somewhat baggy jeans. It's very close in size to AT&T's Fuze, so if you've held one of those, you've got an approximation of the dimensions of the Matrix.

Verdict: two texting thumbs up.

AT&T has a "two for the price of one" sale going on the Pantech Matrix and Samsung Propel this Thanksgiving, and it will be in effect at least until Sunday. It's kind of a messy deal. You have to sign a contract and pay $129.99 for the first device, but you'll get a $50 rebate in the mail. Still, it's a cool way to get messaging devices into the hands of couples.

A worker at a local AT&T kiosk told me last night that he was doing a similar buy-one-get-one-free promo on Quickfires as well. He didn't know if that was a national promotion, or if it was good in stores. I've called around and gotten some conflicting information. If you and someone special want to text back-and-forth, that's a deal worth looking into. Call ahead.

I just got this phone and i already love it. QWERTY keyboard takes getting used to but other wise good. I cant seem to figure out how to set the shortcuts also. The phone is also very chubby, when talking on the phone it feels very fat. The front keys are little slivers and hard to hit sometimes. Also annoying for me is that i wont use any of the internet or tv or music or that fancy stuff so all the short cuts are annoying and i have to exit quickly and i cant seem to change them. overall good, just get used to it.
