T-Mobile's Sidekick LX 2009 is now officially available for $249 after rebate with a new two-year contract. While I had a few minor issues with the MySpace app on mine (mainly b/c I hadn't used my MySpace account in, like, two years), I've already received a few reports from readers who say they bought a SKLX09 but can't get the darn thing activated.

Apparently T-Mo customer service is on the case, however. As one twitterer told me this morning:

yes my wife had a problem last night it did not recognize her password. We called tmo they issued temp pass so no worries.

ib thought the same thing but the buttons are pink and thats sort of girly its like having the maroon Env 2 its cool but its kinda girly jjust get the black one

I've had a weekend with T-Mobile's new Sidekick LX 2009 now, and while that's not quite enough testing for me to give a full-on review of the device, I can give you some first impressions. Look for more feature-by-feature SKLX videos and plenty of twitter updates as I continue testing:

1. Overall the device feels slimmer and nicer than previous Sidekicks. The size and shape reminds me a bit of the AT&T Samsung Impression - it's more like a large messaging phone than a bulky Sidekick, which is a good thing.

2. I'm still a bit worried about the swivel hinge, though - my screen isn't gonna snap off, right?

3. The keyboard is really good, I think. I'm still adjusting to how it's much harder feeling than other mushier cell phoen keyboards I'm used to. But I think that's just adjustment. When I trust the keyboard I notice that my typing is pretty accurate, and the spacing of the keys is great.

4. 3G speeds seem pretty good. Web browser is quite nice so far - not quite on par with the Operas and Safari Mobiles of the world, but it's making pages look as they should, which is the most important thing.

5, I LOVE the twitter client (I'm down on FB and MySpace right now or else I'd love those, too). The notifications system is pretty good - looks like T-Mo learned and borrowed from the G1's notifications panel in developing the SK's system.

6. The screen is as gorgeous as advertised.

7. I mistakenly thought the screen was smaller than G1's screen - I think the relatively large bezel around the screen makes it feel a tiny bit smaller than it really is.

8. I wish there was a way to manually refresh twitter updates, my mail Inbox, etc. So far the best I can find for sating my twitter addiction is "Update every 5 minutes." Won't cut it for me, for better or for worse.

9. Email Inbox limit is too small. That's a big issue with a flagship messaging device.

10. 3.5mm audio jack: Yay!

11. I don't mind the "childish" Sidekick OS as much as some "adults" do, but I do wish I could use my own images as home screen backgrounds. Can I? Anybody know how? The selection of $2.99 wallpapers offered by T-Mo is leaving me a bit cold.

When it comes to the April 21st T-mobile media event in New York City, there were three truths that can be told:

1) It had nothing to do with Android/G2. (If you had bets on this, it's time to cough up the cash.)
2) It was all about the new Sidekick.
3) Free drinks and nachos are cool.

The folks at T-mobile really know how to throw a shindig. Better yet, they know how to put together a cool phone.

So without further delay, here it is: The new Sidekick LX 2009

The integrated Twitter, MySpace and Facebook feature is smooth, the screen is spectacular and the form factor is sleek and mature.

As for background processes, app switching and notifications, the handset itself feels fast and zippy. The only lagginess at all had to do with getting decent 3G signal on the NYC block we happened to be on. Sadly, we didn't get to experience the full juiciness of the network, but this certainly won't be the case everywhere. (That speed is really going to come in handy for uploading videos to Facebook.)

Did I mention that the hi-def LCD screen is flat-out gorgeous? And the keys are, predictably, super easy on the fingerpads.

The Orchid (pictured) or Carbon casing isn't swappable, which might disappoint some SK fans, but in the hand, this Sidekick doesn't feel plasticky and toy-like, as the SK handsets of old did. It feels substantial, but not heavy. And the dark color and — lest we forget — the upcoming arrival of MS Exchange are intended to make this a more sophisticated messaging center. So if you don't need a full-blown smartphone, but want to stay connected (or watch YouTube clips on a spectacular display), this gizmo offers a sweet alternative that doesn't look like a Leapfrog toddler gadget.

So that's the quick overview of my first impression with the Sidekick LX. Like we mentioned before on PhoneDog, Noah will get his hands on the device for a full review as soon as he can. In the meantime, I'm working on uploading the video we took at last night's party asap, so you can see the handset in action for yourself. Stay tuned.

ADDITION: Duh. I was so excited to see this phone that I almost forgot to include the following: The T-mobile Sidekick LX 2009 will be available for retail sale at select T-mobile stores and online starting May 13th. The price is $199 with a two-year contract and mail-in rebate.

When done well, unboxing videos can be fun and really informative about what a user can expect to see when a new phone lands at the front door. But when a vid misses the mark — man, it's tough to watch.

I fear that our friends at T-mo may have gotten a bum deal with this promo. The vid was clearly created by some PR folks, and it's... well, clearly contrived. Maybe even kind of creepy. But the real question is, does it make you want this phone?

If you're a Sidekick fan, then chances are you've been waiting for the 2009 version (code name: Blade) for what seems like forever now. Well, today's your lucky day. T-Mobile is opening up pre-orders online for the new Sidekick LX, which — like Noah mentioned — drops nationwide on May 13 in select T-Mo stores and online.

The phone comes in Carbon or Orchid, and will cost you $199 with a two-year contract and mail-in-rebate. Here's what you get for the money:

Integrated social networking, which puts automatic updates for Facebook, MySpace and Twitter right on the home screen.
GPS-enabled Live Search, so users can locate nearby stores or cafés, share fav locales with friends, or check real-time traffic, gas prices or movie showtimes.
3.2 MP vid/camera for recording and uploading to social networking sites.
Audio and video streaming
Hi-speed Web with support for T-Mo's HSDPA 3G network.
And according to the press release, it's got the largest, brightest screen ever on a T-Mo device. At 3.2 inches, the F-WVGA screen features a high-def LCD with 854x480 res.
1GB microSD card (included)
Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP (stereo BT, file transfer and BT printing)
Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE worldphone (850/900/1800/1900 MHz)
Dimensions: 5.1 x 2.4 x 0.6 inches; 5.7 ounces
Support for Microsoft Exchange is on the way. (Once the phone's released on a full retail basis, users will be able to get Exchange Active Sync support from the Sidekick's Download Catalog.)

So if you're the type who likes texting your fingers off or staying up-to-date with multiple social networks, you will definitely want to consider pre-ordering. Otherwise, you'll have to wait in line. (Don't let it happen to you: Lines were nuts at last year's handset debut. Seriously, you might as well just bring a blankie and pillow.)
