Gorgeous display: Bold's HVGA (480 x 320) display is absolutely stunning. Maybe the best-looking screen on any cell phone available today.

New UI is actually modern-looking: Yeah, I know, you've got a custom theme on your Curve that makes it look even better than the iPhone. Great. For everyone else, Bold's UI makes it the sexiest right-of-the-box BlackBerry experience to date.

Everything good about Curve plus a healthy dose of style: Bold is slimmer and sleeker than Curve, and the black with chrome color scheme is hot. Even if it is a blatant iPhone knock-off. But BlackBerry kept all of the features that make Curve so great ...

Keyboard and features: The keyboard has been tweaked but still seems solid. The trackball is still great. There's an improved HTML browser, onboard GPS, and a bunch of other goodies waiting for you on Bold, as well. And the media player, 3.5mm headphone jack, and camera with flash area all still there. That means that feature-wise Bold is a richer multimedia device than iPhone 3G. How can I say that? iPhone's camera lacks a flash and its Bluetooth implementation lacks the A2DP (stereo) profile.. Note that I did say "feature-wise," as iPhone's iPod user experience is still the best thing goin' on a multimedia phone.

3G: Call me when AT&T's 3G network actually works in the San Francisco area. But if you've got solid 3G service where you live, you're gonna like Web browsing on the HSDPA-enabled Bold. At least, I hope so. Call me after you've actually tried it; one never knows with AT&T these days.

I'm no BlackBerry guy, but I've been jonesing for a QWERTY board as of late. If Touch Pro had an integrated 3.5mm headphone jack, I might be lining it up as the next contestant in my own personal game of "Can It Replace My iPhone?" But it doesn't, and I love my Etymotic earphones. So Bold, you're on deck. Can't wait to take you out for a proper spin.

Rant: Rant, in all honesty, looks a lot like the LG Rumor that debuted at last year's Fall CTIA show. It's a low-end messaging phone with a candybar/horizontal slider design featuring both a dialing keypad and a full QWERTY thumbboard. Really, it's quite reminiscent of Rumor right down to the auto-rotating display and extra softkeys that let you work equally well in vertical or horizontal (with the QWERTY board slid out) orientation. A big difference betwee Rant and Rumor, however, is that Rant is made from metal and feels very solid in hand (not that Rumor wasn't solid - it was just a bit more plasticky). This one features Sprint's new One Click user interface, which looks to be a good stab at adding some user friendliness and customization all at once.

Highnote: Highnote's a music-centric slider with a jog dial/click wheel/d-pad on the front and a dual-sliding design. Slide the top panel up and a standard dialing keypad is revealed. Slide the panel down and you get a speaker for crankin' out the jams on the go. Highnote's not going to replace your home stereo system, but the speaker does provide a little more oomph than your standard cell phone can muster. Only a little though. Beyond that, I like the iPod-esque click wheel - particularly because it doubles as a D-Pad and so lets you click and scroll through menus and playlists with ease and speed.

Both phones will launch next month: Rant for $49 on contract in your choice of three colors, and Highnote at $99 on contract in a pair of lovely hues.

ARTICLE: CTIA Fall '08: Hands-on with Sprint's new LG Lotus, Noah Kravitz

I got a little up close time with Sprint's Fall lineup at the CTIA media event Wed. night, and you can check out the results via video. But if you're old skool and prefer reading to watching, here's a quick rundown of what I thought of the three new "dumbphones" about to grace Sprint's lineup, starting with the LG Lotus and moving on (in a second post) to the Samsung Rant and Highnote

LG Lotus: This is the most interesting device of the lot for me. And not just because I got to wear the custom scarf designed by Project Runway winner Christian Siriano (seriously - you can see me looking foolish in it in the video). Lotus is a square-shaped clamshell phone that looks a lot like a makeup compact and will come in all black and black with a purple front faceplate featuring a flower motif. The device has a big, 2.1" external screen and an even bigger 2.4" internal display, and also features a full QWERTY thumbboard on the inside. Lotus will support just about all of Sprint's multimedia offerings, including Sprint TV, and packs a 2MP camera with video capture mode. The phone also sports Sprint's new One Click UI, which is designed to promote ease-of-use via customizable home screen "tiles" and shortcut menus.

Lotus is chock full of features, and the unique square clamshell design provides ample room for a comfy QWERTY board and big internal display. My question is whether or not consumers will adopt the strange shape of the phone. I actually think the square design has a lot going for it in terms of practicality, and it certainly offers a unique alternative to the standard rectangular look of most cell phones. But people fear change a lot of the time, and I really am curious to see if Lotus can make it hip to be square this Fall.

ARTICLE: CTIA Fall '08: Sony Ericsson announces Xperia X1 Launch Date ... Not for U.S.

I was hoping to hear some new news from Sony Ericsson here at CTIA WITE regarding the forthcoming Xperia X1 smartphone. And I did ... but it's not the full story, and unfortunately for folks like me (in the United States), the piece of the puzzle still missing is the most important one.

SE announced a September 30 launch date for the X1 in the UK, Germany, and Sweden. And they announced a forthcoming announcement regarding a US launch ... but no actual launch date. Seriously.

Confused? The deal is that the X1 will drop in the aforementioned markets on the 30th, in other European, Asian, and Latin American markets later in Q4 of this year, and in the US of A ... uh, sometime soon. And they'll tell us exactly when on November 3rd.

So to recap ... For U.S. market, SE will hold a press event on Nov 3rd to announce when the US-spec X1 will launch. For folks in the UK, Germany, and Sweden, the actual phone will actually be available on September 30th.

Oh, and SE is going to run a live demo of the device via Webcase next Monday the 15th at 7AM ET. You can check it out at http://www.sonyericsson.com/premiere.

ARTICLE: CTIA Fall '08: Day One Wrap-Up: HTC's Lineup

I'm going to be honest with you: It's 9:20 AM and I don't feel good.

Yesterday at this time I also didn't feel good. That was because I partied too much the night before. Happy hour with a few industry friends, then a press party, Nokia party, Verizon party ... these things add up. Today I don't feel good because I actually worked the show yesterday. And while I kept the partying to a healthy minimum last night and got home reasonably early, when I closed my eyes to go to sleep I couldn't turn my brain off ... Which phone was my favorite? Which phone did I want to get some more time with today? Which phone that hasn't been shown yet am I most excitedly waiting for?

Trade shows are nothing if not overstimulating, and this year's Fall CTIA has definitely been a bit more newsworthy than last year's show. So there was plenty to keep me from settling down and drifting off last night, even though I'd avoided the party scene. Ah, well, occupational hazard.

So what'd I see yesterday and what'd I think? Let's start with HTC:

HTC

First off, thanks Eric for getting us out of the convention center and to a bright, airy space with good coffee for our meeting. Always nice to do these things with a bit of style and some clean air and natural light ;-)

Touch Diamond: I've got a Sprint-branded review unit to unbox and review, and I'm looking forward to it. I like what HTC and Sprint did with the back panel of the phone, and the minor "Sprintifications" to TouchFlo 3D look good. Sprint Music Store and Sprint TV seem to work well, too. Look for a full video or two soon.

Touch Pro: On the one hand I'm really excited for Touch Diamond + QWERTY. On the other hand, this sucker is thick. On the third hand (?), the Sprint-branded version has a nice silver/grey color scheme and rounded edges that give the device a sleek look that almost helps you forget how thick it is. Touch Pro will launch at a relatively small $50 premium over Diamond, so I'm very curious to see how it fares in the marketplace. Bulk aside, it looks to be a pretty sweet Windows Mobile solution.

S740: I was surprised by how much I dug this phone person. It's long, skinny, and not paritcularly thin, and there's no touchscreen, but somehow it really worked for me. I think I liked how roomy the QWERTY pad was and how it felt like a phone when I held it to my ear - the long, narrow body put the microphone closer to my mouth than most current cell phones do. Also, the S740's unique shape made it feel like an artifiact from the future. Too bad for us it'll only be available in Europe; an unlocked GSM version will work in the U.S. but won't offer compatible 3G bands.

Touch HD: Didn't see this one, didn't get any word on it, but I'm guessing we should keep our eyes open for more on this forthcoming all-touch, WVGA badboy.

Dream/G1: Zip, nada, nothing. Must find HTC today and try again :-)

VIDEO: Blackberry Bold Hands-On

Noah hits the show floor and gets up close and personal with the new Blackberry Bold.
My big complaint about Diamond is that the screen is too small for me to comfortably use it with my fingertips. And I'm just not a stylus kind of guy. Pro's slide-out QWERTY board means I can type on buttons and use the touchscreen "only" for pressing buttons and gesturing my way through the UI - instead of trying to write messages and enter URLs via onscreen keypads. Much, much nicer if you ask me.

Like I said, we'll be back soon with more on this one, but HTC may just have the Windows Mobile device of the season on their hands. Look for it in the coming months on Sprint and AT&T (as the Fuze), at the very lest.

ARTICLE: CTIA Fall '08: Hands-on with the Blackberry Bold and Flip

Greetings from the press area at Moscone West in downtown San Francisco. I gotta say, I'm loving this makeshift press area - I'm sitting with Tom and Doug at a table next to two stories of windows overlooking downtown. And it's a nice day out, to boot. Good stuff, CTIA.

While the big consumer device news is yet to come later today (meeting with HTC) and tonight (Mobile Focus press event), I did get some hands-on time with the two new Blackberries on the show floor just now. First was the Bold, which I got to play around with at a hotel bar a few weeks back while at Intel's Developers Forum. Today I got a little more time with it, and I'm generally impressed. Blackberry's made their user interface sleeker and hipper - which should add to the mainstream consumer appeal of the Bold and Flip - and the new UI looks great on Bold's rich, bright display. The rumors are true, Bold has one of the best looking displays currently available on any phone. Beyond that, the device looks and feels like a thinner, cooler-looking Curve. The trackball's there, the keyboard is slightly redesigned and feels good, and the whole thing is done up in a very iPhone-esque black with chrome trim.

The Flip - or Blackberry Pearl Flip 8220, as it's officially known - is a slightly chunky flip phone with a SureType keypad and trackball on the inside. While it's cool that Blackberry made a flip phone, I personally wasn't so into this one. It works well and the internal display and keypad are both nice and roomy, but the phone is just too big and chunky looking for my tastes. That said, if you're into the design you'll probably like Flip just fine - the new UI looks good, the SureType keypad is larger and easier to use than the one on the original Pearl, and the 3.5mm headphone jack and 2MP camera with flash bring some entertainment value to the mix, as well (Bold's got the camera and headphone jack, too, don't worry).

While there's no official word on a US release for Bold, RIM and T-Mobile have announced that Flip will launch sometime this Fall as a T-Mobile exclusive. Pricing and an exact launch date have not yet been disclosed, however.

And, oh yeah ... we've got video of both devices in action for ya ... it's uploading as I write this, in fact.

VIDEO: RunKeeper for iPhone 3G - CTIA Fall 08

Noah gets a demo of RunKeeper, a new GPS-enabled fitness application for iPhone and iPhone 3G.
According to the vice president of HTC America, Jason Mackenzie, "Combining Sprint's mobile broadband connectivity with HTC's deep desire to blend innovative design with intuitive simplicity sets the HTC Touch Diamond and the HTC Touch Pro apart from other touch-screen phones. HTC Touch Diamond gives users one-touch access to every aspect of their life and transcends texting and dialing to provide a rich mobile Internet experience unlike anything available on the market today. The HTC Touch Pro combines business with pleasure by offering one-handed operation of simple tasks and a full keyboard input for serious work."

With a new customized Web browser on both the Touch and Pro, customers can expect "easy viewing and effortless navigation" of websites along with zoom and pan functions. Behind their 2.8 inch high-resolution VGA displays, additional features include a customized, HTC-developed YouTube application for watching user-generated video content; and quick access to Sprint TVSM with an extensive selection of live and on demand video.
