Still waiting on Palm Pre and the next Android phone

Palm and Sprint sequestered a few Pres away in a meeting room turned "VIP Lounge" off of the show floor. While I got demos of a few new Pre apps, including an emulator for legacy Palm OS apps, media and analysts still weren't allowed to hold or play with the phone ourselves. No launch date or pricing info, either. I honestly love the folks I know at both Palm and Sprint, but this is getting frustrating.

Meanwhile, the MWC launch of HTC's Android-Powered "Magic" handset on European carrier Vodafone had me salivating over the prospect of a similar device launching on T-Mobile USA at CTIA. Nope. Nothing new in the way of Android devices in Vegas except rumors, rumors, rumors: Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, and even Huawei are all set to launch Android devices this year. Supposedly.

Netbooks, Netbooks, Everywhere
While the show was light on high-profile new phones for US carriers, there was lots of talk about *other* connected devices coming to the states later this year. Verizon and AT&T have both been talking about selling 3G-equipped Netbooks using the subsidized model common to new handset purchases. AT&T talked about a possible $49 with two-year agreement price point for a Dell Mini Netbook, Verizon had an early prototype of a new version of their Hub - the all-in-one home phone/Web/messaging center featured on a recent episode of Gossip Girl. AT&T also talked a lot about wanting to get most every piece of consumer electronics possible online via an embedded cellular radio, a concept that Sprint and Verizon have also been talking about as of late.

Speaking of Netbooks, Asus showed off their latest models while Intel, Nvidia and Qualcomm showed off their latest chipsets in netbook and MID (internet tablet) prototypes. Samsung also launched Mondi, a WiMax/WiFi tablet computer that will be on sale in the US later this year. WiMax, LTE, and HD Video were the buzzwords of the week in Netbook land.

Nationwide, High-Speed, Contract-Free Service
Zer01 Mobility soft-launched their new $70/month, unlimited voice and data service for unlocked GSM devices. They've got some magic combination of VoIP software and four million roaming agreements that they say will get you unlimited voice and 3G data all across America for $69.95 per month. I'm eager to try this out. Meanwhile, more than one of my fellow media types was spotted with a Cricket EV-DO dongle plugged into his laptop's USB port. $40/month for unlimited data with no contract? And it works? Sweet. Apparently it doesn't quite work as well as Verizon's more expensive, need-a-contract plan, but it's a big step in the right direction. Enough of the mandatory two year commitments, already - people who already have equipment just want speedy, reliable dumb pipes for voice and data. Looks like we may finally be getting them.

AT&T Launches Phones, T-Mobile Launches Just One, and Sprint and Verizon Don't at All
AT&T launched a six-pack of Spring handsets two days before CTIA started. T-Mobile launched a single device, an entry-level Nokia phone. Sprint and Verizon launched exactly zero new phones between them.

On the one hand, yawn. On the other hand, Nokia's e71x (AT&T) may finally get Symbian S60 some love in the US with its combination of excellent hardware and a very attractive $99 price point. Also, Samsung's Impression and LG's Xenon brought some stylish touchscreen love to AT&T's messaging phone lineup.

And the lack of US carrier releases at the show just means there's all that much more to be excited about come late Spring and Summer ... right?

VIDEO: Samsung Finesse (Metro PCS) - Hands-On

Metro PCS goes TouchWiz! This year the company announced two new Bluethooth headsets: the Sound ID 200 and the Sound ID 300.

Sound ID 200: This Bluetooth headset is all about reducing background noise through NoiseNavigation technology, making this a good option for people who tend to talk on a cell phone in noisy environments. There's also automatic volume control for seamless volume adjustment to fit the environment where you're using the headset.

Sound ID 300: This Bluetooth Headset is filled with technology that helps you set it to your own preferences. This model comes with NoiseNavigation and PersonalSound technology, which helps eliminate background noise and choose from three listening modes for better clarity without actually having to increase the volume. This lightweight (0.28 ounces) headset comes in black and sports a universal micro USB charger. You'll be able to find this headset in a couple of weeks at AT&T for about $100.

VIDEO: HTC Snap Hands-On @ CTIA Las Vegas 2009

Noah gets hands-on with HTC's new Snap, a super thin Windows Mobile smartphone with a QWERTY board, track ball, and the new Inner Circle feature. Designed with a set of features selected to deliver everything customers need without overwhelming them with things they don't, the HTC Snap makes it easier than ever to stay in contact with life's most important people.

A recent study conducted by Harris Interactive® and commissioned by HTC* found that 44% of US adults are often overwhelmed by the amount of email they receive, and over half (55%) of US adults prioritize five or fewer people with whom they communicate via email. In response to these issues, HTC's innovative Inner Circle feature allows HTC Snap users to press a dedicated Inner Circle key to bring emails from a preselected group of people to the top of their inbox, enabling important messages to be acted upon immediately.

"Recognizing that people are being overwhelmed by an avalanche of email, the HTC Snap introduces Inner Circle, an HTC innovation that makes it easy for people to prioritize messages from the most important people in their lives at the press of a button," said John Wang, Chief Marketing Officer, HTC Corporation. The full QWERTY keyboard is ergonomically designed with extra-large domed keys and responsive tactile feedback to make typing emails and text messages fast, accurate and comfortable. High-speed 3G HSPA connectivity makes it quick and easy to send pictures to friends, access favorite social networking sites, or download large files while on the go.

The HTC Snap is powerful enough for experienced business users looking for an affordable, straightforward choice for remotely synchronizing email, calendar and contacts with their Microsoft Exchange server. However, the flexible Microsoft Windows Mobile® 6.1 Standard platform allows the HTC Snap to also be simple enough for first-time smartphone users wanting to keep their family life organized.

The HTC Snap is expected to be available in select channels during the second quarter of 2009, rolling out in markets around the world throughout the second half of the year. The company announced partnerships with Pandora, Facebook and the game wizards at Electronic Arts, among others, and will go ahead with plans to preview a demo version of the software store this week at CTIA.

(BTW, Noah's flight to Las Vegas has landed and by now, he's probably unpacking his vid cam and gear, so check back soon for all the cool show coverage you've come to expect from the Krav.)

When it comes to application marketplaces, you really can't talk about them without mentioning Apple. By now, everyone knows that its real innovation wasn't the iPhone, but its App Store. The 25,000+ software distribution point has spawned tons of imitators across different platforms, from the Android Marketplace to the upcoming Blackberry and Pre cellphone software stores. (Speaking of Blackberry, handset manufacturer Research In Motion is going to launch its own App World at CTIA as well.)

While Microsoft may not be leading the pack here, at least signs look good that it's committed to creating a worthwhile experience for mobile end users. In addition to Pandora and the others mentioned above, look for Gameloft SA, Accuweather.com and MySpace to get in on the act. The company also expects many of its existing cellphone software partners (of which there are roughly 20,000) to submit stuff as well. Talk about an embarrassment of riches: That's potentially a mountain of applications, and the marketplace hasn't even launched yet. (If all goes according to plan, the store should have its grand opening in the second half of the year.)

Here are some other interesting nuggets from the Reuters article:

The store will work with WinMo 6.5, which is also slated for release later this year.

LG's WinMo phones released at that time will have MySpace preloaded.

Microsoft will announce an alliance with fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi, who will create customizable phone themes.

The company's planning on enticing carriers by splitting the software revenue with them (after 70% goes to the developers) and enabling them to have their own stores within the marketplace.

If the last one pans out, says Reuters, then it may enable app purchases to show up on a user's phone bill, to be paid along with other cell phone charges. That would actually be nice, instead of contending with tons of itty, bitty transactions. With 6.5 and a robust marketplace coming up, it looks like 2009 will be treating WinMo fans quite nicely, and that's just awesome. It's about time you guys got some rewards for all your loyalty.

ARTICLE: Research In Motion to launch BlackBerry App World on April 1st?

According to an article published in BusinessWeek, RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis is expected to launch the BlackBerry App World during his CTIA keynote in Las Vegas on April 1st. Thanks to the wide-reaching success of Apple's App Store, RIM, Nokia, Microsoft, and others are quickly catching on to what could easily become a profitable segment of their business model. RIM is no stranger to the application front having worked with software developers since 2002, however this will mark the first time that all programs are available in one centralized location.

In the growing battle to launch application storefronts, App World will feature downloadable programs starting at $2.99 - pricier than Apple's .99 entry level, but also high enough to dissuade programmers from creating useless applications. They're also fighting for developers; RIM is taking a 20 percent cut of the software sales, whereas Apple requires 30 percent in order to list in their App Store. "There's going to be a significant counter-challenge to Apple," said Mike McGuire, an analyst with Gartner."

Regardless, RIM has a challenge before them, as Apple's App Store offers 25,000 software programs of all shapes and sizes. Yeah, yeah, I'll show you the Instinct Mini pics, too.

Sprintusers' user "phonetec" posted four photos allegedly taken by him/her (with a BlackBerry Curve, if you care). Sprint needs to make some major waves here, and CTIA in Las Vegas (April 1-3) is just the place to make a huge splash. Those commercials where CEO Dan Hesse begs for your money, I mean speaks earnestly about how in tough times his company wants to provide extra value? They came from the right place but haven't done much to help the flagging company's image. Sprint has a great network and offers great value. What they need now is a killer smartphone and a stable of solid Windows Mobile, messaging and multimedia phones to draw people back into the fold ... then they'll have to keep them there with solid customer service. That last part has been Sprint's achilles heel as of late.

The killer smartphone? Palm Pre. Despite today's seemingly made up rumors of some guy at Palm saying something about a delay, I still thing we're going to get our official launch on April 1 with a ship date of May 1 or 15. The only official timeframe we've EVER been given by Sprint or Palm is "First half of 2009," and there's nothing substantitive yet out there to indicate that Pre won't ship by the end of June as scheduled. That said, Sprint and Palm are holding a webcast for media next week (March 12), so check back with me after that for a revised prediction.

The Windows Mobile options? HTC Touch Diamond2 and Touch Pro2. Look for both devices to launch in Sprint branding on April 1, as well. Diamond2 should ship by the end of April followed by Pro2 sometime in May or early June. HTC did some great work on both device's hardware and software, as they showed at MWC last month. I'm particularly fond of the deeper integration of messaging and contacts in TouchFlo 3D. Also, both phones are ready for WM 6.5 (which is a bigger deal than you might think).

The multimedia phone? Samsung Instinct Mini. I've never been a huge fan of Instinct, but plenty of Sprint users like it just fine, and Sprint and Samsung have steadily been stomping bugs and upgrading features since it launched at last year's CTIA show. Vegas '09 would be the perfect venue to drop Mini2 on the public - preferably at a nice, low price point and with an updgraded Web browser.

The messaging phone? LG Rumor 2. While I'm not exactly sure what to make of the superficial similarities between Rumor, Samsung Rant, and the photos I've seen of Rumor 2, messaging phones are still hot and tweens love their options. While Rumor 2 might not make sense in Samsung's eyes, seeing how Rant was just launched in September, LG and Sprint are probably just fine with the idea of a Rumor successor being unveiled on April 1.
