A winner at CTIA earlier in the year the Nokia E72 has officially launched. Though it's still showing as "pre order" status on Amazon's website, the S60-powered device has launched for €350 ($469 at Amazon). Sporting 10.2 Mbps HSDPA connectivity, 5.0-megapixel autofocus camera, 3.5mm headphone jack, microSD slot (4GB included in the box), A-GPS and integrated compass, and a trackpad, the E72 is a worthy successor to the popular Nokia E71.

On the fence as to whether you want one? Check out the E72 video (from CTIA), and stay tuned for more coverage!

Dubbed Horizon, Symbian Foundation’s software center/publishing program/mobile marketplace works for all users of the platform, unlike the software offerings from Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson, which have each had their own stores for a while. All of them, however (in addition to AT&T's Media Mall), will support Horizon, integrating its apps into their inventories.

Though it starts with only 50 apps, Horizon promises that many more will hop onboard next year. Word on the street is that Nokia is mulling over the idea of buying Palm. Wowsers. Could you imagine the N97 or the N900 with WebOS?

From a business standpoint, it would make sense. When it comes to smartphones, BlackBerry and iPhone are tearing up the track. Android devices, by way of HTC or Motorola, is looming large in the headlines, especially lately. But Nokia has failed to generate buzz that’s even remotely on par with these devices. Palm, however, is low enough on the totem pole to make acquisition possible, but high enough — thanks to the Pre — that it could give a nice bump for Nokia. It would certainly help close some of the gap between it and the market leaders, says analyst James Faucette, of Oregon-based Pacific Crest Securities.

And Nokia’s already proven itself a willing buyer. The company nabbed Navteq last summer for $8.1 billion. Even after that hefty purchase, it still has about $9 billion left in the piggy bank, more than enough to put Palm in the old shopping cart.

PreCentral made some other good points about Nokia and the possibility of acquisition:

The company could use some juice, and its S60-Symbian OS isn’t cutting it anymore, given its age and limitations

The purchase would add to Nokia’s market share, with the Pre, Pixi, and — most importantly – WebOS being welcome additions to the product portfolio, as well as the Palm name

The company would benefit from a better base in the U.S., where it has struggled to maintain a foothold

From a valuation standpoint, the Finnish phone maker would also see gains in its stock prices**

As for Palm, depending on the terms, it could benefit from a larger R&D budget. Nokia soaks $3 billion into research and development, a figure that’s 10 times what the former PDA-maker invests in that department.

There are only a couple of things that could stand in the way of this deal. First, Jon Rubinstein: Palm’s top dog tends to like going it alone, and probably wouldn’t jump at the chance to be acquired. Second, what are the chances that Nokia is the only company eyeballing Palm? Even if Rubinstein and the company were amenable to being taken over, industry pundits think there could be other suitors who are privately interested.

For Nokia’s sake, if the deal happens at all, it should be inked as quickly as possible. Palm’s resurgence is still in its nascent stages. In the years to come, there’s potential for the Pre-maker to become a larger player in the smartphone market, which would make any takeover a tougher proposition and a more expensive one at that.

So that’s it for the “what if” scenarios. Back to the facts now. In reality, neither Palm nor Nokia would comment on this rumor. But that neither confirms nor invalidates the story, so like everyone else in the industry, we’ll have to wait and see what unfolds. Stay tuned.

[via PreCentral.net, Bloomberg.com]

** If you own any Nokia or Palm stock, you might be interested in the following tidbits, courtesy of PreCentral and Bloomberg:
Faucette also claims that while Palm stock is trading around $17, to Nokia it may well be worth $25 to $30 a share. Looking at the outstanding stock currently on the market, that would put the acquisition value at $3.96 billion - $4.75 billion (including the impending 16 million share secondary stock offering). If we were to factor in the ~1/3 of Palm owned by Elevation Partners, the hypothetical bid would balloon to $5.94 billion to $7.13 billion.

Palm stock was buoyed significantly by the news, rising 7.02% ($1.12) to close at $17.07, a new 52-week high for PALM. During the day shares traded as high as $17.50. Yesterday Palm surged 14% in a perfect storm of trading and news. Monday and Tuesday combined, Palm has risen 21.8%, and from the December 2008 lowest close of $1.42, at the close of trading [yesterday] Palm was up an astounding 911%.

ARTICLE: Due to 3G issue, AT&T pulls Nokia Mural off of store shelves

I love the sleek metal body and QWERTY board of the E71/E72, the tricked out camera of the N85/N86, and the over the top slider mechanism and storage capacity of the N97.

I hate that it took Nokia about five lifetimes to figure out how to position the A and the Z on a keyboard, and how the battery cover on their $700 flagship phone is a cheap plastic POS that broke the first time I tried to replace it.

I love how innovative the N95 was.

I hate how un-innovative the N96 was.

I love what the E71 and E75 do for typing.

I hate what the 5800 and N97 do for touching.

I love how Nokia rules Europe.

I hate how Nokia has failed in the United States.

I love that Symbian OS has long handled multitasking like a champ, had a true HTML Web browser years before any other mobile platform did, and lets its users create, consume, distribute and share music, video, photos, podcasts, and other media without silly business-driven restrictions.

I hate that Nokia and Symbian rested on their laurels for so long that the S60 UI, the Web Browser, and the media player now feel hopelessly out of date when compared to their competitors. Seriously, Nokia, you call the 5800 and N97 "Touch Optimized" devices? Have you SEEN a Pre, Touch Pro2, or iPhone lately?

I love that Nokia E- and N- Series devices come equipped with standard headphone jacks and above-average cameras. And that many of them come with exotic in-box accessories like TV-out cables.

I hate that Nokia headphone jacks don't play nice with BlackBerry and iPhone-compatible headsets and their in-line remote controls.

I love that the lowly 5310 XpressMusic is super slim, has an Active Standby home screen, and sounds great as an iPod-clone when used with quality earphones.

I hate that I couldn't get myself to use the 5310 as my personal phone for more than a month before I missed having a larger screen, good Web browser, WiFi, 3G, etc, etc.

I love that Nokia is the number one cell phone maker in the world and that they rule when it comes to churning out low-end phones that reliably make and receive calls with battery life to spare.

I hate that I haven't really liked a high-end Nokia in a few years now. Save the E75, which I sort of love. Except that I'll never carry one around because I can't stand S60 anymore.

Wow, felt good to get that off my chest. And I'm sure I missed some stuff. How about you? What do you love and hate about Nokias and Symbian?

You fill up the comments and in the meantime, I think I'll pick another platform and do this all over again ...

ARTICLE: Nokia decides to offer another sale, starting tomorrow

Last week, Nokia offered up a substantial deal for those looking to pick up an unlocked handset, and it appears that it was successful, as they're doing it this week as well. On Thursday, June 25th (tomorrow), those interested can order online, or pick up their devices from one of the flagship stores - 11 AM-4 PM (Eastern) in New York City, or 10 AM-3 PM (Central) in Chicago. The device prices are below:

5800 $280.00

E63 $195.00

E66 $275.00

E71 $285.00

E75 $380.00

N79 $260.00

N85 $330.00

N95 8G $355.00

N96 $440.00

Anyone going to pick up a device, either online or in one of the stores?

Source: BGR

ARTICLE: Nokia N97: Stuck between Symbian and a hard place

I've been testing the Nokia N97 for more than a week now. On the one hand, I'm not very impressed with the device. On the other hand, I know it represents a predictable refinement of Nokia's N-Series lineup that will keep thousands of Symbian loyalists happy until the first Symbian Foundation OS devices hit the market. If they ever do.

Still, I don't think the N97 is a worthy competitor to smartphones from the likes of HTC, Palm, and ... yes ... Apple. I've been using terms like "trainwreck," and "befuddling" to describe it, in fact. I know I'm going to get a ton of, "You don't like anything that's not an iPhone," "You don't understand how awesome Symbian is" Emails about that one. That's fine, but hear me out.

Nokia is the biggest cell phone maker in the world. They sell, I don't know, like a gazillion phones each year. Smartphones, messaging phones, super cheap dumbphones - Nokia makes, sells, and ships all sorts of phones to all parts of the world and to all sorts of customers. The N97 is the newest flagship Nokia, and is the current king of the N-Series, which is their flagship line. So this is the newest, bestest phone from the world's premier maker of phones. Ergo, it's a big deal.

Therefore it's also a big deal that the N97 feels more like a retread from Nokia's 2007 product lineup than a state-of-the-art device circa 2009. Back in October of '06 I wrote a gushing review of Nokia's E70, a rather oddly shaped but very powerful and innovative smartphone for the time. The E70 featured a full QWERTY keyboard, 352 x 416, 16 million color display, Symbian OS 9 Series 60 platform, and both GSM and WiFI connectivity. Despite the phone's chunky profile, I was amazed at how well it handled virtually everything I could think of to do with it - and the E71 wasn't even Nokia's flagship device of the moment.

Web browsing, in particular, was a joy on the S60 browser, which was basically the best in the business at the time. I had qualms with the user-friendliness - or lack thereof - of the S60 interface, but it was worth climbing the learning curve in order to do wield such a powerful mobile device. The phone ran about $350 unlocked, and wasn't available subsidized via any US carriers, but I felt it worth the price tag so long as the boxy industrial design wasn't a deal-breaker for you.

Jump ahead to now, June 2009, just over two and a half years later. The N97 just started shipping at an unlocked price of $699, and while it features a ton of storage, a top-notch camera, and a touchscreen, it still runs the good ol' Symbian 9/S60 platform (albeit a few tenths of a version number newer) and still features more or less the same Web browser with those features that felt so innovative 30+ months ago.

There are some nice things about N97, and there are thousands upon thousands of apps available to Symbian S60 users, but the device feels old and half-baked, not fresh and exciting like flagship phones from Nokia's competitors. N97's specs are top-notch (save for the lack of a capacative display), and I'd be the first to tell you that Nokia knows how to do hardware (though the battery cover on this thing is a bad joke), but Symbian 9.4, Series 60 release 5 with some touchscreen modifications just doesn't cut it in today's smartphone OS world.

The experience of using S60 on a touchscreen is lackluster at best - the home screen UI is made up of chunky rectangles where the Palm Pres and HTC Touch Pro2s of the world feature smooth fonts, eye-pleasing curves, and soothing animations. N97s display is pretty responsive for a resistive touchscreen, but it's no match for the made-for-fingers capacative multitouch displays of the world. Yes, I was able to use the phone - it's not as though nothing works. But my time with N97 made me feel like Nokia's either found themselves in a horrible bind relative to the transition between Symbian OS 9 and the first Symbian Foundation OS ... or ... they just don't care about competing with the iPhones, HTC G1/Magics, and Palm Pres of today's world.

Symbian loyalists have already stopped reading or started penning point-by-point counterarguments to this post by now. And that's good - like I said, back in 2006 I was all about the power of S60 and Nokia's eye-poppingly high end E- and N-Series devices. But it's no longer enough that you can multitask and take great photos on a Nokia smartphone. Or maybe it is?

Nokia sells a ton of phones, like I said. Connoisseurs of entry-level handsets will tell you that inexpensive Nokias have long been known for great voice quality and great battery life. And Symbian maintained a two-to-one lead over its closest competitor in terms of smartphone marketshare as recently as Q4 2008, according to Gartner. So maybe Nokia's content to rest on its aged platform and substandard user experience in order to continue shipping incrementally better spec'd devices that continue to support the enormous Symbian ecosystem.

Except ... According to the same Gartner report, Nokia's smartphone sales declined almost 17% in Q4 2008 vs Q4 2007, while its four closest comeptitors - RIM, Apple, HTC, and Samsung - all experienced growth. Apple and Samsung each sold twice as many smartphones in Q4 '08 as compared to the same period of 2007. So while the Finnish giant still maintains a healthy working margin as the world's #1 seller of smartphones, that margin is shrinking.

I really hope that Nokia's got a revolution in store for us when it comes to the high-end Symbian experience. Whether its the Symbian Foundation OS or a new release of S60 that was re-engineered from the ground up for touchscreen devices (is such a thing even possible?), I want to see Nokia ship some modern devices offering modern user experiences. Last year's E71 and this year's E75 showed me that the company still knows hardware. And the recently announced E72 shows that they may be taking customer suggestions when it comes to hardware refinements and feature sets.

Dare I say it, but I almost thing Nokia would be best off launching an E- or N-series device running Android instead of Symbian. That'll never happen, I know. But imagine a phone with hardware prowess of an E71/72 or N95, with a capacitive touch display, running Android?

Heck, as I look at the N97 sitting on my desk, I imagine it running Android - and maybe with a new QWERTY board featuring the space bar in the middle instead of all the way off to the right - and I smile. Nokia knows hardware - they always have. I just hope they relearn software very, very soon.

ARTICLE: Nokia announces the E72 and 5530 XpressMusic

Granted, the past few weeks have been centered around iPhone 3GS and Palm Pre news, but the guys at Nokia have been working hard as well. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out that inexpensive = good when you're in a recession, and these little cheapie machines have been grabbing lots of headlines lately.

So it's no surprise that Nokia's interested in joining the race. Here's the interesting bit: Its OS of choice, Symbian, might actually be running these new computers. The company indicated as much in recent comments to the press.

Seriously? I mean, you know the PhoneDog crew loves Symbian, but this just seems kind of weird. PC Mag's reaction hits the nail on the head: "Is the device just going to be a huge phone? It's ridiculous. Stop now, guys, before it's too late!"

Now rumors are circulating about Google possibly bringing Android to its own netbook. That makes a little more sense, since its roots are in Linux. (Linux, Windows and OS X are the main computing platforms for computers.)

WIth PC makers already thigh-deep in mini notebooks, and rumors of an Apple netbook on the way, having a Google-supported Android computer seems kind of fitting.
