3g, What, How, Where
Using a 3G network is supposed to be spectacular. Remember all the hype when the iPhone 3G was being released? Well 3G actually stands for 3rd generation. To keep it simple and not get technical, when your device indicates you are running on your carriers 3G network (a little 3G symbol appears on your home screen) your cellular speeds will be faster. Streaming entertainment and video functions will improve. So don't freak out when 3G shows up on your phone. This is a good thing! Related VideosNoah continues looking at the new iPhone 3G. In this video it's IMing using the AIM app, which is free and works on old iPhones and iPod Touches, too. Also, how to send and receive SMSs without paying AT&T for a messaging plan! US-ready 3G, WiFi, 3.2 MP Camera, and lots of Series 60 goodness here. Related Blog Articles & NewsDespite insanely long lines, device shortages at AT&T stores, and the massive failing of iTunes servers that led to a bunch of bricked iPhones on launch day, Apple claims to have sold a cool one million iPhone 3Gs during launch weekend. By contrast, it took 74 days to sell a million of the original iPhones. That brings Apple to some 7 million iPhones sold since the original model's launch last June, which puts them right on track... After a long, unsuccessful day of trying yesterday, I headed back out this morning at 7:45 to try once more to secure an iPhone 3G. I got to the Bay Street shopping center in Emeryville, CA around 8 or so, and there was already a long line at the Apple Store - my best estimate had me staring at a 3 or 4 hour wait, minimum. Then I remembered that there's also an AT&T retail outlet in that mall. So I walked down there and... So honestly this whole iPhone launch thing sucks. After being denied by a sold-out AT&T store this morning, I'm now wasting my afternoon in line outside of the Apple store. Been here almost 90 minutes now and the actual store is still a long ways off.
The Apple employees are passing out free pizza and burritos now, which is nice and all, but how about a purchase and activation process that doesn't suck? That'd be cool, right, not to have... 1 pm and I'm second to last in line at the Apple Store in Emeryville, CA. Ironically enough I'm blogging on a Sprint Instinct while I wait for my new iPhone. This here's a looong line I'm in. Wish me luck.
Well, I waited in line at the AT&T store in Berkeley and before I got to the front they ran out of iPhones to sell. They're taking orders, and "may have more tomorrow" but that doesn't help me, right? So I'm off to the Apple Store Bay Street in Emeryville, CA. I called and a nice Apple salesperson named David told me that they have iPhones in stock, but there is still a long line. Is it worth my getting in line, I... I just got word from a friend of mine in Providence, RI who was thinking about picking up an iPhone 3G today. "Man, I can't believe how naive I am sometimes," he said over the phone. "I figured, yeah, cool, I need a new phone, I'll go for it and get the iPhone. Sold out all over the place. Providence, Warwick, Cranston, Boston - nobody's got one left." He was referring specifically to the AT&T outlets in the... I arrived at the AT&T store in downtown Berkeley, CA at about 8:10 this morning and the line stretched out the door, down the street, and around the corner for a total of about three city blocks. City blocks being "the long blocks," in NYC parlance. An AT&T rep was manning the front door, letting folks in one or two at a time and then closing the door behind them to stave off the rabid — I mean, totally mellow — crowd.
The rep wouldn't... A day before the iPhone 3G launch, Apple has made the iPhone 2.0 software and iPhone App Store available online. Current-generation iPhone owners can update their devices to the new version of the software and browse, purchase, install, and use iPhone Apps via the Apple iTunes Store.
There's a wee bit of trickery involved here as Apple hasn't started promoting the new iPhone stuff just yet - and if you undertake this you're doing so at... How important is Friday's iPhone 3G launch to Apple? Important enough
to put a freeze on all in-store repairs of the company's line of Mac
computers, apparently. My MacBook recently broke (again - four breaks
on the original I bought and now one break on the replacement Apple
gave me four or five months back), and I took it to the Apple Store in
Emeryville, CA this Monday to see about getting it fixed. The good
news is that... Big shots get Apple products early, that's just how it is. Early iPhone 3G reviews have been filed with the likes of the Wall Street Journal, the NY Times, and that rag of rags, USA Today. So what do the most well known tech writers in the land think of the new Apple cell phone? And beyond Walt and Dave, what does that guy you've never heard of from USA Today think?
On par, here's what I gleamed:
- David Pogue is awesome,... More 3g articles »Related Discussions & Forum ThreadsI Think I may pick up one of these to use as a second phone. Does anyone have any hands on experience with it yet?
