Currently available with Alltel Wireless, Noah got his hands on the LG Glimmer at CTIA last week. The first touchscreen to be a part of the Alltel line-up, the Glimmer is a solid slider device with haptic feedback, media player, micro USB port, and an easy to read menu system from LG that helps you navigate thru all that Alltel has to offer.
From the Emerging Technology Awards area at CTIA 2008 Las Vegas last week, Noah recorded Unlocked episode #4. This episode highlights the best phones of the show, other successful devices, and a rumored 3G iPhone coming soon.
Taking top honors for consumer handsets was the Samsung Instinct followed by the Nokia N96. AT&T made an impact with their new TV devices, the LG Vu & Samsung Access.
We check out two more phones we wish would come to the US, including SE's new flagship Cyber-Shot handset, the C902. 5MP camera and a nifty touchscreen. Also, check out Paul Dateh on the hip-hop violin!
The coolest phones at shows like CTIA are almost invariably ones not destined for the US market. With that in mind I'm keeping this list to new phones shown at CTIA that will be available in the US, either on US carriers or unlocked with a full array of US-spec radio bands onboard. So you won't find the Samsung Soul, Nokia N82, LG KT610, or SE C902 on this list. You also won't find iPhone 2, since it's still only a rumor — even if it's a very hot, now confirmed-for-Summer rumor.... I went into CTIA last week on the hunt for a new phone to replace my iPhone. It's not that I'm unhappy with iPhone so much as I miss having a good camera and also, in the name of being a with-it phone reviewer, feel like it's time to carry a different phone around with me every day to see what I do/don't miss about iPhone. While I get to test many phones on a limited basis all the time, iPhone's been my personal phone for several months now.
I was really expecting to come home... I spent a week in the desert staring at cell phones and came away with the same feeling I had a few weeks before going to CTIA: people are finally starting to understand that user experience matters as much as feature sets when it comes to developing high-end mobile devices. In other words, the average consumer in the U.S. isn't just looking at the "Free After Contract" section of the phone store anymore, but if they're going to spend $200 or more on a handset, they want something that's... Last week during CTIA 2008 in Las Vegas, Noah and Doug took to the sky with Nokia to learn about the new N810 WiMax tablet. To add to the wow factor of CTIA, Nokia's conference in the sky was hosted outside and up 180 feet in the air!
Noah goes hands on with the HTC Shift in this video, and learns what this CDMA version for the Sprint network can do. This ultramobile PC is a windows touchscreen device that uses Vista, and can run via WiFi or EVDO connection via Sprint. The HTC Shift also offers a Snap View interface which highlights your "day at a glance".
Hands-on with Sony Ericsson's new flagship Walkman phone, the w980. It's a flip with 8GB of memory and a crazy clear plastic edge with glowing lights. SE added a SensMe™ program to the W980 that allows for the consumer to tell the phone their current mood and then listen to specific music they have set.
What do you get when you cross an LG enV(2) with the Symbian S60 operating system? A: The LG KT610, a phone I really wish was coming to America. This GSM device can work in the States but the 3G data is not U.S. backed so the web browser and other services just won't be the same as when using the device overseas.

If it was for sale it'd cost two grand. But it's not for sale. Well, maybe. It's the gold-plated Iron Man phone from LG - think Shine in red with extra bling.
Slimmer, sleeker, and sexier. The original enV was a very cool phone that felt like a brick. The enV(2) keeps the cool but sheds some size. And it's cheaper than the original, too. enV2 offers a dedicated music button, larger numbers,opens to a larger screen and QWERTY keyboard.
We wade through all the "Best in Show" awards at the Samsung booth to check out the new Access. It's a phone that supports AT&T's new mobile TV service and will be available in May. And it let me see Eddie House pick up a flagrant foul. Awesome.

Motorola V950... Hands-on at CTIA '08 with Nokia's latest N-Series device for the North American market. US-ready 3G, WiFi, 3.2 MP Camera, and lots of Series 60 goodness here.
I got some time to check out Sony Ericsson's forthcoming flagship smartphone, the Xperia X1, here at CTIA and also got a thorough demo from an SE representative. You can actually check out the demo captured in full video for your enjoyment.
On the whole I'm pretty excited for this device to ship, though a bit concerned about the still somewhat vague "second half of 2008" availability SE's tell folks about. SE has something of a tarnished reputation when it comes to long delays... I hit up the AT&T media and analyst luncheon today at CTIA, and even though I wound up in the entirely wrong building before finally making my way to the room (the smell of free barbecue guided me), I made it there in time to catch a demo of the Microsoft Surface multitouch kiosk that will be debuting in four AT&T stores on April 17. Very cool stuff, and you really should watch the video to get an idea of what this thing is capable of.
