Now that the rest of the world is gearing up for WiMAX, LTE, and other 4G solutions, good ol' T-Mobile is ready to roll out their long awaited 3G network here in the USA. CNET's Kent German reported that he tracked down T-Mobile CEO Hamid Akhavan in Barcelona this week and asked him when the magic switch will finally be flipped. Akhavan "didn't give an exact date but he did promise it would happen by this summer," wrote German.... CrunchGear picked up on a Marketing Week story pointing towards a possible Google-Dell joint announcement at 3GSM in Barcelona next month. I blogged last month about a possible Dell smartphone being in the works, and Google has of course announced their Android mobile operating system, so this alleged partnership is worth keeping an eye out for, at the least.
Dell could, of course, simply be readying an Android-powered device that's... Google's Software Development Kit for Anrdoid - their Linux-based phone operating system - has been in developers' hands for more than a month now. So what's the word on the street? According to Ars Technica's Ryan Paul, it's not all that great. Apparently, developers are pretty hamstrung not only by bugs - which is to be expected - but by the lack of a QA system good enough to aid bug-tracking and other critical elements of... Japanese cellular operator Willcom has successfully demonstrated the Google-backed Android mobile OS running on a reference board (a circuit board mimicking handset functionality). Willcom's demo shows Android's multi-tasking functionality by receiving a call while browsing Google Maps, and gives hungry geeks just a bit more to drool over while pondering the future impact of Google's Open Handset Alliance and the Android platform.
For... A press release showed up in my INBOX 45 minutes or so ago announcing the Open Handset Alliance and Android, "the first truly open and comprehensive for mobile devices." The email also invited me to a conference call featuring a who's who of mobile industry heavyweights from Google, Deutsche Telekom (T-Mobile's parent company), HTC, Qualcomm, and Motorola.

Okay, so a few press releases, a giant conference call, and an afternoon's worth of reporting and blogging later, here's what I can tell you about the Gphone. There is no Gphone, but there will be dozens of Gphones. Google is releasing a mobile phone platform called Android, and has partnered with a few dozen handset and chip/parts makers, carriers, and others to form the Open Handset Alliance, which is seemingly going to do some... Valleywag.com is reporting that Google will be announcing T-Mobile as their first cellular partner, and that said announcement could be coming next week. (Remember, I quoted USA Today about Google and TMob at the beginning of the week?) But they're also saying most folks will be disappointed by the announcement, as it will feature neither an actual piece of hardware nor even a true mobile operating system from the search giant.... The Wall Street Journal is reporting that an announcement from Google regarding their plans to enter the cellular phone market will be coming in the next two weeks. Amol Sharma writes in the October 30th edition of the paper that Google has been in talks with manufacturers and carriers about releasing handsets built around Google-made software designed to their Web-based services and applications to mobile users. Sharma reports that... The more we seem to know about Google's maiden voyage into the cellular space, the less it seems we know. First it was a smartphone and a network, then just a smartphone, then a bunch of smartphones, then a "mere" smartphone operating system to be licensed out ... And now the latest is that the gPhone is once an again an actual phone. But a non-smartphone. But a non-smartphone with a special "gButton."
