BlackBerry Torch Challenge: Day 1

The challenge has begun. For the past few years, I've used Android and Windows Phone. Now I'll be switching to BlackBerry OS with the BlackBerry Torch 9810 from T-Mobile. Why did I pick BlackBerry and why did I go with the Torch 9810? Well, while I have experience with BlackBerry OS because of my job, I've never used a BlackBerry for an extended period of time as my personal device. I figured now was as good a time as any to put BlackBerry to the challenge and see if it can compete in today's market. The Torch fits me because I need a large(ish) display and it's gotta be a touchscreen. Along with the larger display, the Torch still packs the famous BlackBerry physical keyboard. It's an all-around BlackBerry device that suits my tastes.

I'll be using the Torch 9810 for 30 days, starting today, and I'm excited. Regardless of all the bad press RIM has been getting lately, I've always felt that the company still had a shot. Not only that, but the smartphone market needs BlackBerry. Not everyone wants or likes iOS and Android, and Windows Phone hasn't gained much recognition. There's still a chance for BlackBerry. The question is, Can these latest BlackBerrys compete? We'll find out in this challenge.

In this video, I give you some insight into what kind of user I am and what I use my phone for the most. When I think about it, I'm really the perfect candidate for a BlackBerry challenge because I mostly use my phone for e-mail, messaging, and reading news. I also give my first impressions of the OS and the phone after using it for a day. Check out the video and keep it on PhoneDog to follow my experience with switching to BlackBerry for 30 days!

Something like, "When Sydney was six years old, her family bought their first computer, a Packard Bell PC with Windows 3. She quickly fell in love with technology... - full profile

  • Jose SantiagoI wouldnt trade my galaxy s2 epic 4g touch for a blackberry....nooooooooo waaaaaaaaaay!!!!Feb 8th
  • Amanda GamesOnlyI'd give up my phone for a iPhone.. Blackberry should be called Crapberry cuz well it's crapFeb 7th
  • Edward GonseTo be honest I would rather use a Windows phone before a Blackberry. I owned a BB a while ago and I felt its a very stable OS. It was just so plain and boring to use. I admit that android may not run as smooth as BB OS or even IOS but I'll trade in some stability issues and not as great battery life for fun factor and customization any day. GO ANDROID!!! You smecksy little green robot you.Feb 7th
  • Rick DeChiaraLook, I have experience with all the systems except WebOS. You BB haters really need to give BB OS 7 a try before you slam it. My friend has an Evo and wishes he had my battery life, which is ironic considering the newer BBs have bad battery life compared to older models. My iphone friend couldn't believe that my torch was faster (it is) and that my call quality iand signal strength is so much better (again,it is). BB isn't for everyone, but it isn't as bad as you people think it is.Feb 6th
  • Susan PhillipsWell, I kinda had to try an Atrix 2 instead of Samsung At&t, I love it, and am not changing for a while. Some of these newer phones will still be in use even when new ones are coming. They are just that nice.Feb 6th
