Many thanks to Andrew over at INFORM for calling our attention to his company's video, "The Secret Life of Cell Phones." The video highlights the importance of recycling old cell phones (not to mention other electronics and anything else suitable for recycling). Check it out - it's pretty eye-opening to see what happens to your gadgets after you throw them out, and how recycling them can help other folks out as well as helping to preserve our planet.
Old phones can be refurbished and sold on the cheap in less developed countries, or broken down for their reusable metal parts, depending on the particular phone and the condition it's in. Whatever keeps as much of the phone as possible out of a landfill is good by me, and groups like INFORM are trying to get the word out about recycling. More and more carriers are now including free recycling envelopes in the retail packaging of new phone, so the next time you upgrade, take five minutes to package up your old handset and send i
