We’ve been hearing about AT&T and Verizon’s plans for cross-carrier Voice over LTE (VoLTE) since 2014, and now the feature is finally starting to roll out.
AT&T today confirmed that it’s working to roll out VoLTE calling to Verizon customers and that some of its subscribers can take take advantage of the feature right now. “Currently, we are working with Verizon to allow our customers to enjoy that clear audio quality and voice calling features when placing VoLTE calls to Verizon customers and vice versa,” AT&T said to Fierce Wireless. Verizon declined to comment.
Right now, VoLTE calling between AT&T and Verizon appears to be limited to select markets.
It’s certainly taken AT&T and Verizon some time to start rolling out support for interoperable VoLTE calling, but it’s nice to see that it’s finally here. VoLTE allows for higher quality voice calls, and with this rollout, AT&T and Verizon customers with VoLTE-capable smartphones are getting a larger base of people to conduct VoLTE calls with.
