Call of Duty: Mobile is a free-to-play version of the popular first person shooter franchise, adapted for smartphones and touch controls. On Android, you'll need a device running Android 4.3 or higher, while folks with an Apple device will need an iPhone or iPad running iOS 9.0 or higher.
The game offers a few different modes, including a 100-player Battle Royale, Zombies, Free For All, Sniper Battle, and regular old 5v5 Team Deathmatch. There are maps from popular console Call of Duty games like Black Ops and Modern Warfare, including the ever-popular Nuketown. Playing the game will let you level up your character and weapons, unlocking new weapons and attachments along the way. You can also complete Battle Pass tasks to earn more rewards.
Also included are in-app purchases that'll let you buy COD Points, which can be used to unlock characters, weapon skins, loot boxes, and more. COD Points are available for prices ranging from $0.99 to $99.99. There's also a Premium Battle Pass and a Premium Battle Pass Plus that you can buy to help you unlock more in-game rewards.
When it comes to controlling the game, there are two options. The Simple controls have you moving your character with the left side of the screen and looking around with the right screen. In this mode, your character will automatically fire when your reticle is pointed at an enemy. The Advanced mode will give you buttons for aiming down sights and firing your weapon. There are several control customization options in Advanced mode, too, and you have the option of moving your on-screen buttons around.
Overall, Call of Duty: Mobile looks like a solid version of Call of Duty for smartphones. It looks and feels like a COD game, there are popular maps from the console versions of COD, and the controls work well for bringing a console FPS to a smartphone touchscreen. There are definitely in-app purchases and loot boxes, but you can just play the game and earn unlocks that way if you don't feel like spending money.
