Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Review
The Galaxy Note 4 from Samsung is one of the best smart phones available today. It is a great device designed to meet the entertainment and communication needs of today’s smart phone users. Galaxy Note 4 comes with a 5.7-inch HD display and features more pixels per inch than any other Samsung smart phone. The phone displays clear, bright and extremely captivating images. The phone also features a wide-angle 3.7MP front-facing camera and a 16MP rear camera with optical stabilization. The Android Kitkat powered Galaxy Note 4 comes with an S-Pen, 3GB RAM and 32GB Internal memory.
The Galaxy Note 4 comes with the S-Pen or stylus, which is tucked on one side of the phone. Most of the major smart phones do not offer a stylus today. The Galaxy Note 4 offers the stylus to allow users to write and draw on its big 5.7-inch screen. You can use the stylus to take notes, make a list or draw a diagram at work and it also keeps the screen from finger smudges.
The Galaxy Note 4 comes with specifications that set it apart from most of its competitors. The phone comes with a vibrant and colorful display as well as cameras with optical image stabilization. The phone supports today’s high-speed LTE networks and comes with an extremely powerful processor. The Galaxy Note 4, powered by the Android operating system, rivals most of the top rated smart phones available today. The phone has not many drawbacks.
If you are not a fan of using a stylus, then the costlier Galaxy Note 4 may not be the best option for you. You could consider cheaper alternatives without the stylus and with the same screen size.
Design and Technology
Samsung has eluded the plastic mold with the new Galaxy Note 4 phones. Samsung has moved to the metallic models with the Galaxy Note 4. A more textured and back and straight sides add to the allure of the new Galaxy Note 4. The physical buttons are easy to locate and use with your fingers. The Note 4 may not be comparable to the LG G3, HTC One M8 or iPhone 6, all of which feature a much smoother build quality.
Portability and Size
Galaxy Note 4 appears to have the same size and portability as that of an iPhone 6. It is slightly bigger than the Note 3 released last year. The LG3 appears to be much more compact than the Galaxy Note 4 when you compare it by holding both the phones side by side. It is not really possible to use the Galaxy Note 4 with one hand. The same is true for similar phones such as iPhone 6 and other phone with the same dimensions. Many users are satisfied with the Galaxy Note 4’s grip while holding in your hands. The Galaxy Note 4 weighs 6.2 ounces or 176 grams. This compares with 6.07 ounces or 172 grams for iPhone 6.
Galaxy Note 4 comes with 5.7-inch screen size and an increased display resolution with its quad HD AMOLED display. Its pixel density stands at 515 ppi compared to 386 ppi for Note 3. The pixel density for iPhone 6 stands at 401 ppi. Clearly, the display resolution packed into Galaxy Note 4 stands out from its major competitors. The display is extremely crisp and sharp. The phone works great with HD images, 4K video and high-resolution web sites. The different in clarity and brightness may not be noticeable to ordinary users when comparing with iPhone 6 or similar phones from LG. The amount of differences in the visual details should not be major factor in your decision to purchase a Galaxy Note 4 or similar phones.
Other Major Features
The design of the Galaxy Note 4 is similar to Galaxy S5. Galaxy Note 4 comes with a standard home button, two capacitive soft keys and a power/lock button on the right pane. The volume rockers are placed on the left side. The rapid power charging port and the headphone jack are placed at the bottom. A LED flash module is placed next to the camera lens to monitor the user’s heart rate. A micro-SD card slot can be used to add an extra 64GB of memory. The phone is by no means a waterproof phone. The Galaxy Note 4 supports Bluetooth and NFC and also features decent sound quality.
Apps and Operating System
Android Kitkat 4.4, the most popular mobile OS available today, powers Galaxy Note 4. The color-coding of app folders has been eliminated from the Note 4. The Android OS sits beneath Samsung’s TouchWiz layer. Samsung allows customization of most functions such as motion control to notification panel. You can switch to blocking or private mode as well as convert the UI into a simpler Easy mode. Galaxy Note 4 allows users to setup fingerprint scanner to bolster the physical security of the phone. The phone also comes with features to support one-handed operations. You can shrink down the application window to allow handling of the phone with a single hand. The S Health App can check your heart rate as well as monitor your blood oxygen levels.
The Galaxy Note 4 supports a split screen mode. The phone now allows the users to resize two apps from a list of supported apps. A major feature with the Galaxy Note 4 is to drag text and images from websites or gallery to another location using the stylus. You can write a note with the S-Pen and stick it to the home screen if you need a visual reminder. The multitasking options do not appear to be big selling points for this big-size phone.
Using the S-Pen
The stylus that comes with Galaxy Note 4 is nearly the same design as the stylus that came with Note 3. The tech within the S-Pen makes it a power ally to the Galaxy Note 4. It is much more responsive and smoother than the stylus present in the older versions. Text written with the new stylus comes much consistent and darker compared to Note 3. The sensitivity levels on the new Galaxy Note 4 is twice as that of Note 3. The new version of the phone also offers a calligraphy tip to those who prefer to write using the S-Pen.
Video and Cameras
The 16MB camera is great for taking pictures. The optical image resolution helps those shaky movements less obvious while taking pictures. If you are taking pictures indoor or in low light, then the automatic night mode is applied. The 3.7 MB front camera comes with the Beauty Face mode, which shaves off years from your age! In any case, the Galaxy Note 4 is great for taking selfies or professional grade outdoor photos.
The optical image resolution has greatly improved the videos from this phone. You can take brighter videos in 1080 HD or in lower resolution 720 HD mode.
The Galaxy Note 4 could offer 300mbps downstream and 50mbps upstream speeds. The phone is capable is streaming music and videos flawlessly. The phone does not budge even with higher resolution HD videos. The phone comes with either the Qualcomm processor or the Exynos 5433 processor. The 3GB RAM and 32 GB internal memory are good for most users. You can expand to an additional 64 GB memory if needed. The battery keeps the phone running for a full day of browsing, streaming and capturing videos. The battery can gain 50 percent of the charge with 30 minutes of charging. The call quality of the phone is good for most callers and the speaker also works well.
If you prefer to use the stylus, then this phone is certainly for you. It will help you in your office to take notes and draw diagrams by hand. It is a top rated Android device that comes with all sorts of features for entertainment and work. If you don’t need a stylus or the large screen, then you can move on to other small-size phones.
