Pre-paid and No-Contract Services

Pre-paid/no-contract services are available from many independent providers and from the major carriers themselves.  There are many reasons why some people will benefit from a pre-paid service - particularly if you need a temporary additional phone number, or foresee using the phone in spurts over the course of several months but not on a regular basis. Be aware, however, that you’re likely to pay a higher per-minute rate as compared to a contracted plan and you likely won’t receive a discount on the purchase of a new phone with pre-paid service.

Cons of using Pre-paid services

  • Higher per-minute rates

  • Service and Coverage Area may not be as good as a post-paid plan

  • Higher purchase price when purchasing the phone handset

  • Need to re-charge your phone when your minutes are exhausted.

  • Possible surcharges for inactivity, read the fine print.

When should I use a Pre-Paid service?

  • Your credit is unsatisfactory and you don’t qualify for a post-paid plan.

  • You are uncomfortable committing to a term contract.

  • You only use your phone for emergencies and you have no need to pay a significant fee every month.

  • You are visiting the U.S. for a short period of time and you need a cell phone while you’re in the states.

  • You are in the military and you may need to disconnect service while serving overseas

Does anyone know if there would be a problem to switch the phone I have with a different (newer) phone that I have.....it would still be the same carrier, I just want to switch over all of my info. from the phone I have now to this newer phone. I'm just wondering when I call if they are going to try to get me to sign another 2 year contract.....Thanks in advance for any help!! :)

No, all CDMA carriers match up specific phone serial numbers that must match those found in their system.

I need a replacement phone with US cellular and am looking for the best reception I can find as I live out in the boonies in a house with a metal roof. I don't care about any of the extras like camera or internet browsing, I just want to be able to talk on the phone. Can anyone advise me on what phone I should get?
Thanks.

The new Garmin nuvifone G60 on AT&T comes out October 4th and being Garmin, a very good GPS brand, it comes with a built in GPS system which AT&T does not charge for. But it is quite pricey, after the $100 mail in rebate (for which you have to sign up for a monthly $30 minimum data plan) it goes for $299.99, which is the same price as the Blackberry Bold. As Noah would say, "make of that what you will"
